A list of scholarship opportunities to which our office devotes significant attention and for which Colgate has formalized application processes.

Many of the opportunities on this page require the student to be nominated by Colgate. 

There are numerous awards open to underclassmen and those looking for post-baccalaureate experiences. It is possible, and often desirable, to apply for multiple scholarships during your college years and beyond.

Advising on the Application Process

Getting carefully considered and comprehensive advising is very important when deciding which of these opportunities are a good fit for you and your interests, so please be sure to contact the Office of National Fellowships and Scholarships to start the conversation and application process early.

Please note that Colgate's campus deadlines are earlier — often months earlier — than the foundations' deadlines, so interested applicants should prepare well in advance.

  • DOE Office of Science Graduate Fellowship Program

    A fellowship program that provides financial assistance to U.S. graduate students to advance their thesis/doctoral dissertation research at a DOE laboratory/facility.
     
    Candidates must:

    • Be U.S. Citizens or Permanent Resident Aliens at the time of application
    • Be at least 18 years of age at the time of applying
    • Be enrolled full-time in a Qualified Graduate PhD Program in physics, chemistry, material sciences, biology (non-medical)1, mathematics, engineering, computer or computational sciences, or select areas of environmental sciences at an accredited college or university in the United States or its territories

  • Ford Foundation Predoctoral Fellowship

    A fellowship program that supports study toward a Ph.D. or Sc.D. Dissertation fellowships offer support in the last year of the Ph.D. or Sc.D. dissertation, and postdoctoral fellowships offer one-year awards for Ph.D. recipients.
     
    Candidates must:

    • Be U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, and U.S. permanent residents (holders of a Permanent Resident Card), as well as individuals granted deferred action status under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program, Indigenous individuals exercising rights associated with the Jay Treaty of 1794, political asylees, and refugees, regardless of race, national origin, religion, gender, age, disability, or sexual orientation
    • Be individuals committed to a career in teaching and research at the college or university level
    • Be individuals enrolled in or planning to enroll in an eligible research-based (dissertation-required) program leading to a Ph.D. or Sc.D. degree at a non-proprietary (not for profit) U.S. institution of higher education

  • Freeman Awards for Study in Asia (Freeman-ASIA)

    A scholarship that provides financial support for U.S. undergraduate students with financial need to study abroad in designated East or Southeast Asian countries.

    Candidates must:

    • Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident 
    • Receive need-based financial aid or demonstrate need for financial aid 
    • Be an undergraduate student with a minimum GPA of 2.8, pursuing his or her first bachelor's degree (or associate's degree)
    • have applied to or have been accepted by a study abroad based program that awards academic credits through the home campus or other U.S. accredited college or university
    • Have little or no previous experience in the country in which he or she plans to study
    • Must not be a previous Freeman-ASIA award recipient
