Colgate students and faculty continue to conduct research this summer in a wide variety of locations, including one group of geology majors who spent five and a half weeks in the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains and several national parks.

Professor Julia Martinez is looking forward to July 4, but it’s not necessarily because of the barbecues or fireworks. Actually, it’s what happens at those events that piques Martinez’s interest, because of their effect on her research. Martinez, assistant professor of psychology, studies drinking, specifically in the college-age group.

English professor Margaret Maurer has nurtured a love of literature in thousands of Colgate undergraduates and has cultivated that love through book club sessions she leads each summer for alumnae.

The annual Colgate Writers’ Conference returns to campus from June 17– 23, and that brings many opportunities to listen in and engage with professional writers as well as those who are learning the craft.

In his latest book, Orderly and Humane: The Expulsion of the Germans After the Second World War (Yale University Press), Colgate professor R.M. (Ray) Douglas examines “one of the most significant examples of the mass violation of human rights in recent history.” His related essay appears in the Review section of today’s Chronicle of Higher Education.
