Individual Therapy

Individual, bi-weekly therapy sessions are available to matriculated students at no cost. The counseling center allows students to explore various issues and challenges with one of our amazing counselors in a comfortable setting. Students seek individual therapy for an array of concerns including, but not limited to, depression, anxiety and stress, roommate, relationship, and family conflicts, bereavement or grief from a personal loss, self-esteem issues, and adjustment.

To Meet with a Counselor

What to Expect at Your First Appointment

Counseling is a collaborative process tailored to help you cope with your concerns and identify a support plan.

  1. Check in at the front desk when you arrive for your first counseling appointment. Check-in forms take about 5-10 minutes to complete. Most first counseling appointments are about 30 minutes and follow-up appointments are 30-45 minutes.
  2. During your initial session, you and your counselor will review your immediate concerns and discuss any relevant history.
  3. The counselor will focus on learning about your goals for treatment and collaborate on a plan for achieving the goals.
  4. The counselor will discuss treatment options which might include individual sessions, group therapy, or referrals to psychiatry, community provider, or other Colgate health, campus, or community resources.
  5. At the end of the appointment, the counselor will make recommendations and discuss follow-up options based on your individual needs.
