SophoMORE Connections is designed to help second-year students think about major selection, off-campus study options, and internship planning in consultation with our best resources: Colgate alumni, faculty, and staff.

Who

Over half of the sophomore class, 50+ juniors and seniors, and 125 Colgate alumni, faculty, and staff. Bios for all alumni participants will be posted in the online program booklet a week prior to the event.

Amy Dudley ’06

Amy Dudley ’06 is the Chief Spokesperson for the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, the philanthropic organization founded by Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg. She previously served as Communications Director to U.S. Senator Tim Kaine and on the 2016 presidential campaign as his spokesperson and senior advisor. Prior to that, Amy served as Press Secretary to Vice President Joe Biden during the 2012 re-election campaign and as his Deputy Press Secretary in the White House. She has also worked for U.S. Senator Ted Kaufman, in the public affairs office of the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs and as a staff writer for National Journal’s The Hotline. Amy is also a member of the Truman National Security Project, a non-profit organization committed to advocating for smart, progressive national security solutions.

At Colgate, I was part of the SGA Executive Board, the Delta Upsilon Fraternity, and the Konosioni Senior Honor Society. I was hired to be one of the first employees of Talener, a technology staffing firm, joining when they were only four employees. I helped grow the company into a national powerhouse, and led their college recruiting efforts for several years, making them one of Colgate's top alumni employers. In 2011, I was recruited by MongoDB, a database technology startup, and joined them as their first salesperson in New York City. After six years moving up through the ranks, I was recruited by Google and recently joined them as an Account Executive for Financial Services in the New York City Metro Area.

Before coming to Yale, I spent 7 years working for non-profits and I think tanks are at the intersection of food access, agricultural development, and community engagement. I have worked across the food chain and across sectors, tackling complex issues including food insecurity, food system biodiversity, adaptation to climate change, rural hunger, gender and nutrition.

Before joining CityFi, I led Brooklyn Public Library’s innovation efforts as its Chief Innovation and Performance Officer, bringing expertise on civic engagement, government procurement, and public-private coalition building. I've done a lot of work supporting the role of the government in promoting social entrepreneurship, and was tapped to launch the Mayor’s Office of New Urban Mechanics in Philadelphia, where I developed new mechanisms for entrepreneurs to engage creatively with the city to tackle shared challenges together. I also served as Director of the Mayors’ Institute on City Design, a National Endowment for the Arts leadership initiative that afforded me the opportunity to work with more than 200 mayors from across the country, and spent four years in private design practice in Chicago.

A few of my projects include: assisting the implementation and development of a core community benefits agreement to fight against gentrification by supporting affordable housing and workforce development in District 10 of San Francisco; supporting a cohort of eight, tech nonprofits dedicated to diversity, inclusion, and equity in STEM industry; and analyzing data for our Place team’s grant making that is grounded on preserving and empowering the racial and cultural identities of Bay Area neighborhoods through anti-displacement.

I am a senior program specialist for religion and inclusive societies at the U.S. Institute of Peace. Prior to joining USIP in August 2014, I spent seven months in Amman, Jordan volunteering with several organizations, including NuDay Syria and Mercy Corps, to help Syrian refugees through humanitarian aid efforts and conflict mediation. I have experience conducting research on religious trends in the U.S. and Middle East through the Jordanian Interfaith Coexistence Research Center and the Pluralism Project at Harvard University. I also worked as an educator in Abu Dhabi. My interest areas include the implications of religious identity in pluralistic societies and the ways in which religion can be used as a tool through which to teach human rights in conflict-prevention and reconciliatory capacities.

I come to Brookings from the Multicultural Media, Telecom and Internet Council (MMTC), a national non-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting and preserving equal opportunity and civil rights in the mass media, telecommunications, and broadband industries, where I served as vice president and chief research and policy officer.

My experience includes work in the mortgage, securities, technology, and educational industries. I testified as an expert on the use of statistical sampling to make RMBS repurchase claims in the Lehman Brothers bankruptcy and have provided expert testimony on the statistical need to randomly test students for drugs and alcohol.

Currently the principal of Nardin Academy in Buffalo, NY, I started my career in education in Persson Hall. While at Colgate, I directed the Madison County Group Home tutoring program, taught in Summerbridge Cambridge as a Manzi Fellow, and wrote a senior thesis that was the basis for COVE. After graduating, I joined Teach For America and have taught English and Journalism in Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts and Georgia. My passion for scholastic journalism led me to serve the the editor of the Dow Jones News Fund's quarterly magazine for media advisers. I've also had the privilege of being named a National Geographic Grosvenor Teacher Fellow.

I'm a first-generation student and a frequenter of the chapel. I studied abroad in London my junior year and ended up writing a thesis on it senior year, then wrote about it again as part of an Oxford dissertation as part of my master's degree. After graduating from Colgate, I started teaching in independent schools and absolutely hated it, taking a year off to discern whether teaching was meant for me or if I were meant to be an academic. After a year of service at a Catholic, Jesuit all-boys high school in Cleveland, OH as a campus minister and community service coordinator, I found myself entering the fray again as a teacher at an all-girls Catholic high school in Westchester County, NY, all the while pursuing a master’s degree in English and a master’s degree in Adolescence Education.

I feel most comfortable with a camera in my hands. I love talking to people and despite this crazy world we live in, I truly believe in the power of video as a medium to share stories. There's so much content out there, and my goal is to find, create, and share stories that should be told. I started out as a desk assistant at NBC Nightly News. From there, I worked at ABC News and their joint venture, Fusion. After three years there, I was a producer/editor at Upworthy, where I made videos that were close to my heart.

With over 25,000 monthly listeners on Spotify and a million streams on Soundcloud, I've helped grow our brand both domestically and internationally. Beyond the live performances and core music production, I am responsible for the day-to-day operational success of Anden Entertainment, managing tour and music release schedules, cultivating relationships within the industry and creating brand awareness through various digital channels.

Michael Carini ’10

After graduating from Colgate, I was a paralegal at the U.S. Department of Justice, Antitrust Division, in D.C., where I was able to feel out the legal field before taking the plunge. I started my career at the NASDAQ stock exchange working under the founder of a recently acquired startup. While there, I caught the entrepreneurial bug and had the chance to start a new business within NASDAQ in partnership with Amazon Web Services. Building on this business, I started my own company, LastMile, in collaboration with another Colgate 2010 alum to help connect online shoppers with in-store inventory where I work as CEO.

I joined Freshii in 2010 as a store manager. After managing the restaurant for a year, I went on to a multi-unit manager position overseeing all of the Freshii corporate stores. From there, I did anything and everything from store opening training to the Field Consultant position of supporting franchise partners around the world to sourcing real estate. Having the opportunity to work (almost) every position in the company provided me with the expertise to grow into my current position today as Chief Operating Officer.

I grew up in a small town outside of Buffalo, NY and have always had an interest in science. I performed research in Professor Geier’s lab synthesizing porphyrinic macrocycles while a student here. ​I was given m​y first glimpse ​into​ the drug development industry during a summer internship at a small pharmaceutical company​.  ​Having the chance to apply my synthetic organic chemistry knowledge to ​potential medicines was truly eye-opening and defined my career goals.  ​My on- and off-campus​ research experiences led me to pursue a master’s degree in bioorganic chemistry at the University of Virginia where I worked on novel antibiotics.  I have been at Novartis for four years ​now ​working in the Chemical Biology/New Modalities​​ G​roup where I use organic chemistry to develop chemically-modified biologics. Since coming to Novartis I have been able to learn about many different disease areas, experience​ and contribute to​ the drug development process first-hand and learn from a vast community of passionate scientists.

Previously, I spent 19 years at the Boston Bruins as Vice President, Advertising and Promotions and prior to that, Director of Marketing and Community Relations. As the Bruins’ Chief Marketing Officer and Community Relations liaison to the NHL, I was involved in managing several special events, including the NHL All-Star Game and Draft, player retirement ceremonies and the Annual Bruins Wives’ Charity Carnival.  I began my career in sports at the New England Sports Network (NESN) and have been an adjunct professor for sport management classes at Salem State College, Northeastern University and Endicott College. A native of North Wales, Pennsylvania, I played lacrosse at Colgate and later became a collegiate/high school women's lacrosse official.

Since retiring from the NFL, I have become a certified personal trainer and have also become a wholesaler of hemp products for medicinal purposes. Particularly, cannabidiol (CBD) is my focus and the endocannabinoid system which is a biological receptor system in the human body. Our bodies produce CBD naturally so therefore it is healthy for humans to consume when CBD comes from the Hemp plant.

I work on energy efficiency, demand response, and renewable energy initiatives for National Grid, an electric and gas utility serving Rhode Island. As part of my work I collaborate with a variety of stakeholders to develop energy efficiency programs for electric and gas customers in Rhode Island. I also work to find solutions to the changing electric distribution system with colleagues, external parties, and regulators. This includes examining smart grid technologies, investing in energy efficiency instead of distribution and transmission, and how best to integrate renewables, electric vehicles, and energy storage into the electric system.

In addition to serving as a cabinet-appointed regulatory division director, my experience includes 12 years managing, coordinating and communicating between State and Federal agencies (EPA, DOE), Congressional delegation, state legislators and a wide range of stakeholders, including activist groups and local Indian Pueblos. In addition to regulatory compliance and outreach, I performed within the QA/QC/CAS programs at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), and has extensive environmental remediation field experience in New Mexico and New York State.
