Institutional Advancement

Murray Decock

Read About Murray
Murray Decock has served as vice president of the Office of Institutional Advancement since 2002. Murray most recently served as the director for Colgate's Passion for the Climb campaign (2007–2012), leading a team that raised $480 million, surpassing a $400 million goal against some of the most daunting economic headwinds.

In addition to overseeing advancement, alumni relations, and career services, Murray has helped develop the architecture and implementation for institution-wide programs in leadership, entrepreneurship, and wellness. Working with faculty, admissions, and the dean of students staff, Murray helped to create and fund Colgate's signature Benton Scholars Program, a competitive admissions and recruitment initiative that attracts students from all over the world to study and engage deeply in the most significant global issues of our time.

Murray has a BA from Colgate, an MM from Indiana University, and a DMA from the University of Maryland. He has been a member of Colgate's music faculty since 1987, teaching in the classroom and in the studio, playing as soloist with the orchestra, and conducting, accompanying, and recording with the University Chorus.

Senior Advancement Executive for Strategic Initiatives Patty Caprio has been a part of Institutional Advancement since 1972 and has served in many capacities during that time. Some of her current responsibilities include 50th Reunion celebrations, athletic endowments, and strategic initiatives.

Patty received an AA degree from Centenary College, where she served as trustee from 1995–2003, and she also received certification from the Katharine Gibbs School. She was awarded a Colgate Maroon Citation in 1989 and the Silver Puck Award in 1994. Patty serves on the boards of Community Memorial Hospital, the Oneida Savings Bank, and Liberty Affordable Homes. She is co-owner of Crow Hill Antiques in Clinton, N.Y. Patty and Joe, her husband of 42 years, have one son and two grandchildren.

Debbie joined the Colgate staff in 2000 in the Office of Residential Life. In February 2004, she joined the Office of Capital Support as an administrative assistant and was promoted to senior administrative assistant to the vice president in July 2012.

Debbie attended Robert Morris College for accounting and Bradford School of Business, both in Pittsburgh, Pa., where she earned a degree in secretarial studies.

Senior Associate Director of Advancement Operations Lindsey began working with the annual fund team in 2008. Now as the senior associate director of advancement operations, Lindsey oversees the entry of gift and alumni records and works closely with Colgate’s information technology staff to ensure data accuracy and flow of information. Lindsey also serves on the OAK Project, a campus-wide committee focused on improving data analytics and accessibility.

Lindsey earned her bachelor’s degree in political science from Colgate. Prior to returning to her alma mater, Lindsey worked as a grants administrator for a large local non-profit. Lindsey is an active Rotarian and serves on the board of directors at the local nursery school. In her spare time she enjoys exploring the local and regional communities in Central and Upstate New York.

Before coming to Colgate in 2012, Cris was working to get her own small business off the ground. Before that, her employment included teaching art to homeschooled kids and working for a small company that sold equipment to convert diesel engines to run on waste vegetable oil.

Cris received an associate’s degree in general studies (education, politics, and psychology) from the Community College of Allegheny County in Pittsburgh. After completing one semester at the University of Pittsburgh, she returned to Hamilton to be closer to her family while her mom struggled with cancer. Cris started a roller derby league based in Madison County and she is still growing her business selling hand-dyed yarn and knitting kits at the Hamilton Farmers’ Market and other local craft shows. Her son Mason is a student at Hamilton Central School.

Tanya began working at Colgate in 2010 in the Office of Gift Records. Tanya is responsible for all aspects of gift and pledge entry, stock and cash wire transfers, and gift receipting.

Prior to working at Colgate, she was a senior banking specialist at Affiliated Computer Services. Tanya earned an associate’s degree in accounting from Mohawk Valley Community College in 1998. She has three children who are all very active in sports, so when she is not working you can find her on the sidelines cheering them on!

Sue joined the division in October 1995 as secretary in the Office of Capital Support. As the advancement technical specialist, her responsibilities include report writing for the division and various offices across campus; maintaining Banner as a stable and clean database; assisting the division and other offices around campus with technical issues and questions about Banner; and addressing the training needs for the division.

Sue worked for Hamilton College for eight years before coming to Colgate. She attended Sullivan County Community College, earned a degree of legal secretary, and was a member of the SCCC volleyball team.

Jozef began his career at Colgate University in 2013 and serves in the Office of Gift Records. Prior to joining the Colgate family, he was employed as the general accountant of a Central New York not-for-profit organization.

Jozef earned an AAS degree from Mohawk Valley Community College and has taken ministerial studies through Global University-Berean School of the Bible. He has a passion for local history and photography, and has been working on a project to capture the history of Utica N.Y. through photography. Jozef serves as a municipal historian, public speaker, and has authored three books. He is a member of the Association of Public Historians of New York State, the Oneida County Historians Association, and the Oneida County Historical Society. In his spare time, he enjoys hiking, burgers, and peanut butter cups.

Sue has been involved in advancement research since 2000, having joined Colgate in 1988 as director of first-year student aid. With the research team, she helps the major and leadership gift officers maximize their fundraising potential by identifying alumni, parents, and friends who have the means and desire to give to the university.

With a BA in political science from Bucknell University and an MA in professional studies from Alfred University, Sue loves Colgate and was honored with a Maroon Citation in 2013. She owes her good health to the vibrant fitness programs in the new Trudy Fitness Center.

Sharon is a lifelong resident of the area and she enjoys her daily visits to the fitness center, being outdoors, and relaxing in her pool.

Cynthia Slentz began her career at Colgate University in 1979, working in various positions in the Division of Institutional Advancement. In 1985, she became the administrative assistant to the assistant to the president and secretary of the Board of Trustees. In 2001, Cynthia became an advancement researcher. Along with other members of the research team, her role is to analyze information on assets, philanthropy, and other business data to identify prospects for gift officers.

Cynthia is a graduate of Powelson Business Institute and also a chocoholic with no desire for rehab.

As associate vice president, Tim leads the university’s efforts to build and maintain strong relationships with its 32,000 alumni through a comprehensive and diverse program that engages alumni across generations, locations, and interests. Tim has served at Colgate since June 2001, holding positions as director of the Office of Residential Life and assistant dean of students.

A graduate of Providence College with an MEd degree in guidance and counseling, Tim has 16 years of higher education experience in student leadership, advising, and alumni relations.

She also supports the 30th, 35th, 40th, and 45th Reunion classes and coordinates Reunion student workers.

Laura began working at Colgate in 2012. She provides staff support to the majority of alumni club regions for ongoing annual programming, including the management of volunteers. She also coordinates Reunion special events, stewardship, and oversees the 5th, 10th, 15th, and 20th Reunion classes.

A native of Lockport, N.Y., Laura holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Wells College, where she served a two-year term as alumnae trustee following graduation. She completed her master’s degree in college student personnel administration from Canisius College, where she was a graduate assistant in the Office of Alumni Relations and an event supervisor in the Office of Event Management.

He works closely with LGBTQ alumni, alumni interested in sustainability, and recent graduates.

Timothy earned his bachelor’s degree in environmental biology and is an active alumni supporter of the Resolutions, Colgate’s premier coed a cappella group. He has a passion for officiating soccer games and is a craft home brewer.

Vicky has worked in the Office of Alumni Relations office since 1994. She began as an administrative assistant and was promoted to a senior administrative assistant in 2005. Vicky primarily supports the director of alumni relations and the senior associate director of alumni relations. She assists with the alumni council, Reunion (primarily housing), and many other alumni office initiatives.

Vicky earned an associate’s degree in occupational studies from Utica School of Commerce in 1983. Before coming to Colgate, she worked at Utica National Insurance Company as an administrative assistant and also as a junior buyer. She is proud and honored to have been awarded a Maroon Citation in 2004. Vicky appreciates all the wonderful fitness classes and facilities available to Colgate employees and is an enthusiastic participant/gym rat!

Sara has been part of Institutional Advancement since 2008 and was named to her current position in 2012. She previously served Colgate as director of annual fund operations, co-director of the annual fund, and associate director of the annual fund. Sara oversees all annual fund marketing and programs, and serves as the liaison to the classes of 1974–1983.

Prior to working for Colgate, Sara worked in annual giving and alumni relations at the University of West Florida for six years where she was chosen as the UWF Employee of the Year in 2008. She earned a bachelor’s degree in biology with a minor in psychology and an MEd in curriculum and instruction from the University of West Florida.

Pat joined the institutional advancement team in 2012 and manages the day-to-day activities of athletic fundraising. Campolieta, a political science graduate, was a two-time varsity captain for the Raiders basketball team and fully appreciates the impact philanthropic gifts have on Colgate scholar-athletes. In 2011, Pat was inducted into the Colgate Hall of Honor.

Before working for Colgate, Campolieta was an athletic administrator at Siena College and completed studies towards an MS in sports management from Brooklyn College. He currently is pursuing an MS in educational administration and policy studies with a concentration in higher education leadership at the University at Albany.

Patty joined Colgate in February of 2006 as an administrative assistant in the Office of the Annual Fund. Patty provides support to the director of the annual fund, assistant athletic director of advancement, and the senior associate director of the annual fund. She is the coordinator for annual fund marketing and manages the classes of 1941–1958.

Before coming to Colgate, Patty worked for 5 years at Piedmont/US Airways and at Fleet/Bank of America for 15 years in the quality assurance department. She studied secretarial studies at SUNY Cobleskill and data processing at Mohawk Valley Community College. With the youngest of her four children now attending Syracuse University, Patty has time to enjoy gardening, spending time with her family, and taking the occasional trip to Disney World.

Jen has been part of the Colgate's Division of Institutional Advancement staff since 2008 and was named to her current position in 2012. She served previously as senior associate director of the annual fund and most recently as director of annual fund programs. In her current role, Jen oversees the Presidents' Club, Colgate's leadership giving society.

Prior to working for Colgate, she worked in Boston for five years as the membership and sales director for the Leventhal-Sidman Jewish Community Center, which is one of the largest JCCs in the country.

Jen earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Binghamton University in 2001 and a master’s degree in public relations from the SI Newhouse School at Syracuse University in 2002.

Graduating from Colgate in 2009 with a major in history and minor in Middle Eastern studies, she went on to attend the University of Oxford on the Paul J. Schupf '58 Fellowship where she received a masters of philosophy in Islamic studies and history.

As director of career services, Michael guides his team in providing students with direct, informed access to Colgate’s alumni and parent community while amplifying the ongoing focus on student development and personal reflection.

Before coming to Colgate in 2012, Mike was director of Career Services at Wesleyan University, worked in career services at Brown University and the University of Rhode Island, and held a variety of student affairs positions at the University of Rhode Island, the California State University, Fresno, and the University of New Hampshire. Mike is a graduate of the University of Rhode Island with a BS in gerontology and an MS in human development, counseling, and family studies. His career has encompassed a few twists and turns including: training in clinical hypnosis; spinal cord injury rehabilitation; and singing backup for Mr. Kenny Rogers.

Vera began her career at Colgate University in 2013. By leading the career advising team, she provides the primary vision for the advising and program development component of the Center for Career Services.

Originally from Cape Town, South Africa, a study abroad experience at Clemson University led her to the University of Mississippi, where she pursued advanced degrees in counseling and higher education. After becoming a licensed professional counselor in Mississippi, Vera served as a career planning specialist and adjunct professor at the same institution. Vera is passionate about empowering others to become the most extraordinary version of themselves— something she accomplishes through blogging and other creative ventures. Her husband, David Chapman, currently serves as the head coach of the Colgate rugby football club. They welcomed their first child, Grayson, in October 2013.

Lamont prepares students and recent graduates in specific areas of career development, management, and planning, and also offers programmatic support to the Office of Career Services advising team. Lamont also serves as the office liaison to the Colgate Entertainment Group on campus network, a student group interested in all aspects of the entertainment industry. He is a volunteer member of the Colgate Equity Grievance Panel and the Office of Admission multicultural recruitment committee.

Lamont earned his MEd in higher education-student affairs from Iowa State University and is originally from Brooklyn, N.Y. That said, although he enjoys the “hustle and bustle” of city living, he appreciates the serenity that is Colgate.

In her new role, Shauna will oversee the programs of summer funding, internship credit, Summer on the Cuyahoga, Day in the Life, and also will connect with alumni and employers to cultivate new internship opportunities for Colgate students.

Before coming to Colgate, Shauna served as assistant director of the Career Center at Colby College and assistant director of admissions at Western New England College. Shauna earned a BA from Hamilton College and an MS in higher education administration from Syracuse University. Shauna grew up in Clinton, N.Y. and is thrilled to return to Central New York with her significant other and their two Newfoundland dogs.

Teresa’s research interests include millennial generation career decision making, translating liberal arts into the world of work, career development for student-athletes, and career development with underrepresented populations.

Keith earned an AAS in civil engineering at Columbus State Community College in 2001 and has a background in small business. He is a land surveyor, licensed in New York and Wisconsin, and is the only Certified Federal Surveyor residing in New York. He has lectured on Riparian Rights, won awards for mapping, and earned a certificate from the University of Wisconsin Extension Small Business Development Center. Keith is a licensed Category 3, USA Cycling racer, and participates in about 20 races each year throughout New England and the Midwest. He also works with the controller’s office on post-award stewardship and compliance. In addition, Bruce is Colgate’s primary liaison with town, state, and federal elected officials.

Doug earned a BA from Colgate in psychology and music and has an MEd from Harvard University in higher education administration. In 2003, he was awarded the Ann Yao ’80 Memorial Young Alumni Award for his postgraduate service to his alma mater and he has been selected to receive the Maroon Citation in May 2014.

From 1993 to 1999, she was director of major gifts as well as director of Corporate and Foundation Relations at Montclair State University. During that time, Dorrie also led Montclair State’s first capital campaign. Previously, Dorrie was director of Development and Public Relations at the New Jersey Center for Visual Arts, and began her career in the nonprofit sector at the Russell Sage Foundation in New York.

After graduating cum laude from Colgate in 2002, Lauren worked in finance as an equity trader on the New York Stock Exchange and then as a public finance investment banking analyst at Morgan Stanley. During this time, Lauren remained an active alumna, working closely with Colgate’s advancement office to establish the Jennifer W. Johnson and the Class of 2002 Endowed Scholarship in honor of a classmate. She also served as a Presidents’ Club class chairperson.

Lauren received her master’s degree in public policy and management from the London School of Economics and Political Science. After returning to the US, Lauren worked as an assistant director of annual fund leadership gifts at Boston University and most recently as an assistant director of development at Harvard Business School.

In addition to his role in the Office of Planned Giving, Andrew oversees the Offices of the Annual Fund; Annual Leadership Giving; Corporate, Foundation, and Government Relations; and Major Gifts. Earlier in his Colgate career, he was a regional advancement director. Andrew works with Colgate alumni and friends to integrate philanthropy for Colgate and its funding priorities with financial, retirement, and estate planning.

During his 19-year fundraising career, Andrew has served as director of development at Bennington College and held several fundraising positions at Syracuse University. Andrew came to Colgate and the Hamilton community in 2004 with his wife Laurie, who is a Hamilton Central School kindergarten teacher, and two sons, Zack and Ben. In the community, Andrew is president of the Hamilton Emerald Foundation and also a youth soccer coach. Andrew holds a BS from SUNY Geneseo and an MA in public administration from the Maxwell School at Syracuse University.

Grace came to Colgate in 1990 as secretary to the Office of Planned Giving. Her role grew until she was promoted in 2004 to associate director for planned gifts administration. In 2008, Grace transitioned to associate director of planned giving, the role she currently fulfills. Grace is responsible for monitoring, stewarding, and acknowledging planned gifts, as well as processing and preparing all new life income gift agreements for the university.

Before coming to Colgate, Grace served as assistant to the corporate department attorneys at Kiley Law Firm in Oneida, N.Y. She earned a BA from SUNY Geneseo. Most weekends in the summer you can find Grace riding ATV with her husband on the Tug Hill plateau in Upstate N.Y.
