Undergraduate Research Opportunities

One of the things that sets us apart from departments at other institutions is the collaborative research we do with students like you. Get graduate-level research experience as an undergraduate, and explore the world of chemistry!
Our undergraduates perform graduate-level research alongside our faculty.

Academic-Year Research

As a chemistry or biochemistry major, you will be required to participate in a full year of original research during your senior year, in collaboration with one or more faculty members.

Typically, students join an ongoing research project in the department. Please visit our faculty members' profile pages to learn more about their interests and projects.

Summer Research

Each year, 10–20 chemistry students remain on campus for the summer to conduct research in chemistry and biochemistry.

Appointments are normally for 10 full weeks, beginning in the first week of June. There is flexibility in this schedule that can be negotiated on an individual basis. Our student researchers are paid a standard research stipend, and are eligible for subsidized on-campus housing.

There are usually several different research opportunities available in several different specialties. To get involved in this great opportunity to build your resume, learn lab techniques and processes, and do research on the cutting edge of the chemistry field, find a faculty member doing research that interests you.

Divisional Summer Research Fellowships

Colgate students only

This program annually awards approximately 20–30 summer research fellowships in the Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. Awards are made on the basis of a research proposal which is written under the supervision of one or more sponsoring faculty members. Applicants should contact faculty members in whose research they are interested as early as possible.

You can find more information about this program at the Center for Learning, Teaching, and Research.

Departmental Summer Research Fellowships

This program annually awards approximately five summer research fellowships from department funds, or from individual faculty research grants. Priority is given to Colgate students, but occasionally fellowships may be awarded to off-campus students.

All applicants to this program are strongly encouraged to contact individual faculty members in whose research they are interested regarding availability of funding and laboratory space.
