As a biology major with an environmental studies minor, Thao Mai ’25 had a distinct career pathway in mind. She decided to pursue not one but two internships for the summer of 2023 — 7,000 miles apart. While the opportunities were in separate industries, they both focused on sustainability and conservation.
Thao’s first experience was in the Algarve, Portugal’s southernmost region prized for its stunning Atlantic beaches. There, she worked as a Dolphin Research Intern at AIMM, a nonprofit marine research organization focused on protecting cetaceans — aquatic mammals such as whales, dolphins, and porpoises.
She learned how to pilot a boat, identify different species, and assess dolphin behavior at sea. She used this data to interpret behaviors and social structure, all while learning from experienced researchers who shared her passion for conservation.
Thao’s second experience was at MPT VN in Vietnam. She served in a variety of roles, including generating operational budgets, collaborating with engineers to develop sustainable energy sources, and supporting interactions between customers and buyers. Thao helped to design and develop sustainable electric equipment and organized energy models while learning to conduct proper testing to ensure the safety of customers and the general public.
“I met some amazing and passionate people who greatly inspired me,” says Thao about both experiences. “They consolidated my desire to pursue a career in conservation and sustainability due to the extremely positive impact it can have in the world.”
