This past summer, Sophie Hart ’23 spent 10 weeks on Capitol Hill serving as a legislative intern for Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney. She worked directly with constituents, answering the phone and speaking with callers about their concerns and requests, writing policy letters, and assisting the communications team with social media and press.
Sophie researched legislation and attended briefings to compose memoranda for the legislative team and for the congresswoman directly. For her cumulative project, Sophie researched and examined how the threat of domestic abuse can be increased by limited gun control legislation. She wrote a detailed long-form memorandum outlining ways that the congresswoman could take the initiative on this issue in Congress.
Sophie tells others that had a wonderful, mind-opening experience working on Capitol Hill. It has inspired her to pursue a career in public policy and legislation.
