All across Colgate our faculty and staff are examining genAI and its implications for the future, while staff are applying their skills to develop applications for Colgate community use.

Our faculty are exploring AI from many angles ranging from the ethics of AI, and developing their own AI-driven language instructional systems to integrating AI systems to more efficiently gather data sets. The faculty below are currently researching AI or using AI tools in their research.

Applications and Projects in the AI Space

Colgate Chatbot

Explore Colgate's AI-based chatbot at ai.colgate.edu. Built by ITS, this chatbot is only available to the Colgate community and runs on Colgate's supercomputer. It can be used for audio file transcription, image generation, and Colgate-related information finding.

ITS has reviewed and compiled a list of generative AI tools that may be helpful in your academic research. 

Colgate’s supercomputer offers graphics processing unit (GPU ) acceleration for AI model training and inferences.

Research on the supercomputer
Scientific software for computational research can be installed on the Colgate supercomputer. The supercomputer runs Linux (x64), MacOS (ARM), and Windows (x64) nodes. The supercomputer offers Dagster, an open source orchestration platform to manage data assets.

Colgate stands ready to support faculty scholarship and creative work, with sources of funding support.

Explore all opportunities for grant funding

Avoid entering confidential data, per the University’s Data Categorization Policy, into AI tools. This includes but is not limited to non-public finance, human resources and medical information, and student records. 

Generative AI tools using default settings may not be private and could expose sensitive data to unauthorized parties.

 

To ensure the safety and protection of Colgate’s data, consult with ITS before procuring internal or external AI tools for use on the Colgate network or Colgate devices. ITS will ensure the tool meets appropriate privacy and security protections.
