Today is Colgate Day.
It is easy to tell when there is going to be a Colgate Day – any
month that begins on a Sunday has a Friday the 13th. Colgate fever has the
tendency to sweep the globe, as alumni wear Colgate garb to work or to play.
People are already sending us their pictures. And their
videos.

As many people know, the university’s connection
to the number 13 dates back to its founding.
In 1819, 13 men — six clergy and seven laymen — met in the
frontier settlement of Hamilton with “13 dollars, 13 prayers, and 13
articles.” During that meeting, the men founded the Baptist Education
Society of the State of New York, the cornerstone for what would become
Colgate.
But the relationship with the number doesn’t stop there.
There’s the university’s address, 13 Oak Drive.
And Colgate’s zip code, 13346, has 13 as the first two digits and the three last numbers add up to 13.
The university’s motto “Deo ac Veritati” has 13 letters.
Happy Colgate Day – even if you are friggatriskaidekaphobic.
