Summer on the Hill inspires new knowledge

Back to All Stories

A group of eager learners spent a long weekend on campus recently, enjoying mini-courses with Colgate faculty and summertime in Hamilton. Though many hadn’t been in a classroom for decades, they found they fit right in.

They were here for Colgate’s third annual Summer On the Hill event.

The academic offerings varied widely, as nine engaging Colgate professors adapted popular class material from across the disciplines — from Meika Loe’s Aging Our Way, to The Israel-Palestine Conflict and the New Middle East with Daniel Monk, George R. and Myra T. Cooley Professor of peace and conflict studies. Loe is associate professor of sociology and director of Colgate’s women’s center.

Other courses included The Messy Business of Democracy: Is This What the American Founders Intended? with Bob Kraynak, professor of political science and director of the Center for Freedom and Western Civilization; and Beatlemania: Deserved or Undeserved? with Marietta Cheng, professor of music and conductor of the Colgate University Orchestra.

Daniel Monk taught about Arab-Israeli relations.

“The variety of courses stimulated our minds,” wrote Lois Ziegler of Manhattan. “There were many interesting events, delicious dinners of healthy foods, and really nice Colgate people.” She attended with her husband Ron Ziegler ’55.

“Once again, Colgate alumni reminded us that the relationship between student and faculty is so valuable,” said Tim Mansfield, director of alumni relations.

Summer on the Hill is just one way alumni and parents can continue their learning through Colgate. Registration is now open for Living Writers Online, a livestream discussion of four books by international writers taking place this fall. The interactive class also includes webcasts, a blog for participants and faculty, a kick-off event in New York City on August 23, and a capstone event on Colgate’s campus with Salman Rushdie.
