More than 60 students and community members recently gathered for the annual HomeRun 5K and half-marathon, which raised more than $1,300 for Madison County’s Habitat for Humanity chapter.
Organized by Colgate’s own Habitat for Humanity group, which is entirely student-led, the road race was held April 10, an unseasonably cold and windy day.
The event was started by John Demler ’08 in his sophomore year, and has continued every year since.
“It was fun running with a lot of other people. I’d never done that before,” said Kathleen Onorevole ’10, who in past years has volunteered for the race. “It was nice to get out there and try something different, and see community support behind that effort.”
“It’s been a really great team effort,” said Lindsay Ward ’10 of the event, which she and seven other student leaders of the university’s Habitat for Humanity group have been organizing since January.
With volunteers from Greek organizations and student groups from around campus, the event was a collaborative one.
“We had a lot of people show up, both students and community members. We were able to raise money for Habitat, as well as spread information about local Habitat projects,” said Laura Stagnaro-Green ’10, a Habitat co-leader.
The county chapter is currently building a house and also does repair and home maintenance work for home owners throughout the county.
