It’s that time of the year again. Look no further but here for the sweetest week at Colgate.
If you are free Wednesday, don’t miss Pulitzer Prize-winner Tracy K. Smith’s poetry reading at 4:30 p.m. in Persson Hall Auditorium.
Smith is the author of three books of poetry. Her most recent collection, Life on Mars (Graywolf, 2011), won the 2012 Pulitzer Prize and was selected as a New York Times Notable Book. Duende (2007) won the 2006 James Laughlin Award from the Academy of American Poets and an Essence Literary Award. The Body’s Question (2003) was the winner of the 2002 Cave Canem Poetry Prize.
On Tuesday at 4:15 p.m., discover the art of Noh Theatre with Yamai Tsunaao at Brehmer Theater. A member of the Komparu school of Noh, Yamai is active in bringing the Noh tradition to audiences in Japan and abroad. He will be accompanied by Shinobu Takahashi, a Noh actor, and Kentara Kihara, a pianist.
While time is running out to find that perfect gift to give your special someone, Maxwell’s Chocolates will be at the Coop from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday for you to get some shopping done.
And don’t forget it’s Colgate Day on the 13th. At 3 p.m. in Memorial Chapel, the Konosioni Class of 2016 will be inducted into the society by current Konosioni members. There will be a short torchlight parade on the Academic Quad with the current and new members, followed by a ceremony and reception in the Chapel. This event will be webcast live.
On Saturday, celebrate all things lovey-dovey by watching the Vagina Monologues, a show performed internationally every year on Valentines’ Day.
VM was written by playwright and activist Eve Ensler. It shares a variety of stories of women and their bodies to raise awareness about and to speak against sexual and domestic violence. The play will be performed at 6 p.m. at Brehmer Theater on Friday and Saturday. Purchase your tickets at the Coop before they run out. All proceeds will go to Victims of Violence.
These are just a few of the many events happening this week at Colgate. For a full listing of events, check out the Colgate calender. And happy Valentine’s Day!
