Colgate President Rebecca Chopp met Tuesday afternoon with student leaders and fraternity members after about 150 students gathered in the administration building to protest the university’s decision to withdraw recognition of the Kappa Delta Rho fraternity.
The fraternity members who spoke to the gathering called for a re-evaluation of the university’s decision regarding KDR and the related suspension of three of its members.
Colgate had ordered KDR chapter operations to cease on Nov. 20 after the fraternity was found to have repeatedly violated the university policy forbidding hazing.
Gregory Stevenson, KDR secretary, criticized the handling of the investigation into the hazing incidents and called for a review of university disciplinary policies regarding Greek organizations.
President Chopp and other university officials later met with seven students ‘ including Stevenson, four other KDR members, and two other students, one of them Bart Hale, president of the Student Government Association for about three hours.
They discussed issues such as the consistent handling of disciplinary matters, proactive steps to avert hazing incidents, and campus safety procedures.
President Chopp and the students agreed to meet again to continue the dialogue.
