Hamilton, NY — – Each year, hundreds of Colgate University students participate in a wide variety of off-campus study programs that provide a rich mixture of cultural experience and academic discipline. Most of Colgate’s study groups are led by the school’s own faculty members, which provides a measure of control over the program and continuity with students’ overall Colgate experience. In turn, the opportunity affords faculty members enriched perspectives that can be brought into the classroom upon returning to campus. Some Colgate students also participate in study groups offered by other colleges. This spring, nine groups of Colgate University students have embarked on off-campus study programs for the semester.
Eleven students on the Dijon Study Group in France, led by Bernadette Lintz, associate professor of Romance languages and literatures, will develop proficiency in French language and acquire thorough knowledge of French culture at the University of Burgundy. The group’s Contemporary Civilization and Culture course includes travel to Paris and the Loire valley to visit the most important chateaux of the Renaissance and to the Midi to visit the Roman ruins and the Pope’s palace in Avignon, among other places.
Professor of German Dierk Hoffmann directs the Freiburg Study Group in Germany. Fifteen students will travel as an introduction to representative cities in German-speaking Europe and the political and cultural forces that shape German-speaking countries.
