School is in the final stretch and I am quite excited!
This week has been busy per usual, but I am feeling great about the weekend. For one, I had a mix-and-mingle with the Chinese Interest Association on Tuesday concerning the trip that I will be making to China with the Benton Scholars Program.
The students explained a lot about Chinese culture and what we should expect. Again, every event like this is a reminder that I am closer and closer to this adventure! I also gorged myself on Chinese food, and I can’t wait to have the authentic taste when we go.
Last night I went to the Brothers’ charity auction. Money made at the auction will be benefiting an organization that helps battered women and women that have experienced domestic abuse in the Hamilton community.
Interestingly enough, my mom used to work in a domestic violence shelter. So being able to give to this organization connected me to my home. I feel as though I am contributing to something that my mom, and others, can be proud of.
As usual, all organizations on campus always find a way to give back to the community in an impactful way, and I am glad that I had the chance to be a part of that.
Beyond donating a significant part of my minimal college-student-sized savings, I now have four dates with four handsome guys that I won through the “auction.” I can’t wait!
Also, today, I went to a Brown Bag directed by my fellow LASO member, Jennifer Rivera. She spoke about ICE raids, and the massive deportation of immigrants following a 2008 raid of a Kosher meat processing plant in Iowa.
A great discussion followed, and I am so glad to be able to have intellectual conversations with my fellow Colgate students. Jen did a great job.
This weekend, I will be attending the CSA and Brothers combined banquet where proceeds go to helping Haiti. Then, I will be going to Syracuse to shop for more clothing for my upcoming fashion show. I’m super excited to see this all come together!
(I’ve been asked to write each week about what life is like as a first-year student here at Colgate. Until next time!)
