Hamilton ‘ Judy Collischan, associate director of curatorial affairs at the Neuberger Museum of Art at SUNY-Purchase, will speak about public sculpture at the Colgate Humanities Faculty Colloquium on Tuesday, November 9 at 4:00 p.m. in the Ho Lecture Room, Lawrence Hall. Colgate is considering plans to purchase, in the near future, a series of sculptures that would be permanently installed in various sites on the campus.
‘Art stimulates dialogue and inspires alternative thinking,’ said John Knecht, professor of film and video. ‘We hope that public sculpture on Colgate’s campus would help with that aspect of the educational mission of the university. Therefore, we want to get a community dialogue going about the function and place that a public work of art would have at Colgate. With this in mind, we have decided to bring in a series of speakers to address issues surrounding public art and its impact on the community.’
At the Neuberger Museum, Collischan organized the 1997 and 1999 Biennial Exhibitions of Public Art. She has also served as the director of the Hillwood Art Museum and of the Public Art Program at Long Island University, where she organized a number of contemporary public sculpture exhibitions and helped build a permanent collection of outdoor sculpture.
