Colgate falls 4-0 to the Retrievers in a lightning delayed contest
Hamilton, NY — The Colgate University men’s soccer team kicked off its 2003 campaign with a disappointing 4-0 loss to the University of Maryland-Baltimore County.
UMBC started the scoring early in the first half when Derek McElligott scored just 2:24 into the first half. Matt McGowan assisted on the goal. Then at the 10:26 mark, lightning and thunder delayed the game for exactly one hour.
The Retrievers turned it up in the second half scoring two goals in 30 seconds. Kevin Mezzadra scored at 62:54, followed by McElligott at 63:24. UMBC would add an insurance goal from David Feazell to set the final at 4-0.
Will Martin (Excelsior, Minn/Breck) made six stops in net for Colgate, as the Raiders were outshot 15-8. Colgate outcornered the Retrievers 9-8.
Colgate (0-1) is back in action Saturday afternoon, when they take on Robert Morris at 3 p.m., in the second day of the Adidas Kickoff Classic.
