March 27, 2004 FAIRFIELD, CONN. – The Colgate men’s lacrosse team scored four times in the final nine minutes of play to erase a one goal Sacred Heart lead and come away with a 10-7 win over the Pioneers Saturday afternoon. The loss extends Sacred Heart’s winless streak to seven-straight to start the year while Colgate evens their record at 4-4. The Raiders controlled play in the first quarter, keeping the Pioneers in check and building a 3-0 lead. Colgate got on the board quickly, scoring 43 seconds into play on senior Jeff Vander Meulen’s (Liverpool, N.Y.) first of three goals on the day. Sophomore Robert Trasolini (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) and junior Eddie Brennan (Hillsborough, Calif.) also found the back of the net to provide Colgate a three goal advantage at the end of the quarter. SHU began their climb back 30 seconds into the second quarter as sophomore Matt Robideau (Massena, NY) converted a pass from fellow sophomore James Hinkson (Whitby, Ontario) for the Pioneers first goal of the day. Senior Ben Giamichael (Cortland, NY) cut the Colgate lead to 3-2 at the 8:30 mark, scoring unassisted. The Raiders built their lead back to two goals, 4-2, with just over four minutes to play in the half on Trasolini’s second goal of the day. The score would remain the same over the closing minutes of the half with Colgate holding a 4-2 advantage at the break. The Pioneers took charge in the third quarter, tying the game up just under three minutes in on unassisted goals by junior Christan Lynch (Northport, NY) and Robideau. Colgate wasted little time in answering, as Vander Meulen buried his second of the day on the man-up advantage from Brennan. SHU sophomore Adam Dzedzy (Glenmoore, PA) pulled the Pioneers even in stylish fashion, as he slashed toward goal, took a feel from freshman Peter Greco (Hamburg, NY) and wrapped a shot behind the head and in for his second goal of the season. Giamichael gave Sacred Heart its first lead of the day at the 5:04 mark of the third, scoring unassisted for a 6-5 lead. The Raiders answered once again early in the fourth quarter as freshman Brendan Hurley (West Islip, N.Y.) scored off a pass from Vander Meulen to knot it at 6-6. Robideau pulled the Pioneers ahead once again at the 9:09 mark, scoring his third of the day unassisted. The Raiders began their comeback run with 7:24 on the clock as Hurley struck again for his second of the game to tie the game at 7-7. Colgate pulled back in front at 3:03 as Trasolini buried his third goal and eventual game-winner. Senior Ramsey Brame won the ensuing face-off, picked-up the loose ground ball and scored just 14 seconds later to give Colgate a two-goal cushion. Several SHU shots in the closing minutes sailed wide and Vander Muelen scored his third with 19 ticks left to ice the win for Colgate. Vander Meulen finished with four points on three goals and an assist. Trasolini also had three goals for the Raiders. Sophomore Andrew Jarolimek made nine saves in goal to earn the win. Robideau’s three goals give him a team-leading 11 on the year while Giamichael scored twice for the second-straight game. Sophomore Thomas Hind (Farmingdale, NY) made 10 saves in goal for the Pioneers. The Raiders are back in action on Saturday, April 3 at 1 p.m. as they host Lafayette on Tyler’s Field in the team’s second league game of the season. |
