Hamilton, NY — The Colgate men’s lacrosse team rallied from a 7-2 halftime deficit but fell short, as the Raiders dropped a 10-9 heartbreaker to Bucknell University on Saturday afternoon on Tyler’s Field.

Colgate (5-6, 3-2) got on the board first at 10:16, as senior Peter Watts (Wayland, Mass.) scored off a pass from senior Scott Herbst (Short Hills, N.J.). The Bison answered with three goals as Andrew Copelan and Kyle Morin tallied unassisted goals and Chris Cara scored off a pass from Copelan. The Raider’s final goal of the firs half came with 8:48 left in the second period as sophomore Jason Vasas (Fairport, N.Y.) took a pass from freshman Mark Nemith (Albany, N.Y.) and beat the Bison’s goalie Justin Sussman.

Bucknell (8-4, 4-1) closed out the second period with four unanswered goals. Morin scored on a man-up opportunity, Michael Petrash tallied an unassisted goal and Patrick Christensen scored back-to-back goals to give the Bison the 7-2 advantage at the half.

The Raiders rallied in the third period. Colgate’s defense clamped down, holding the Bison scoreless in the period while the Raider’s offense came alive, scoring five goals. Senior Nick Gerken (Wilton, Conn.) got the rally going with back-to-back goals, both of which were assisted by freshman Robert Trasolini (New Hyde Park, N.Y.), at 13:06 and 9:22. Herbst made the score 7-5 on a man-up opportunity off a pass from Vasas before Vasas added his second tally of the game, from Watts, at 4:17. Eleven seconds later, Watts’ second goal of the game, off a pass from junior Ramsey Brame (West Hartford, Conn.), tied the score at seven apiece.

The Bison scored three goals to begin the fourth with Kelly Hogue converting off a pass from Copelan and Rob Lane scoring two unassisted goals.

With the score 10-7, junior Jeff Vander Meulen (Liverpool, N.Y.) scored back-to-back unassisted goals at 9:32 and 3:47 to bring the Raiders to within one but Colgate’s last second shot at the end of regulation was saved by Sussman.

Freshman goalie Andrew Jarolimek (Silverthorne, Colo.) made 14 saves in net for the Raiders while Sussman stopped 13.

Defensively, Colgate junior Greg Berube (Plaistow, N.H.) had five ground balls while junior Jonathan Pico (Denver, Colo.) played an outstanding game, holding the Bison’s top-scorer, Chris Cara, to one goal and one assist.

The Raiders travel to Buffalo, N.Y. to face Canisius in a non-conference game on Tuesday, April 22 at the Demske Sports Complex at 7:30 p.m.
