Men’s Hockey Holds Off Rensselaer, 3-2

TROY, N.Y.Jon Smyth (Markham, Ont.) and Adam Mitchell (Port ?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = 'urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags' />Elgin, Ont.) each recorded a goal and an assist to lead the Colgate men’s hockey team to a 3-2 win over Rensselaer Saturday night at Houston Field House.

With the win, Colgate clinches a first round bye in the ECAC playoffs and remain in first place. The Raiders pick up their first road sweep since February 9-10, 1999 at Yale and Princeton.
 

Colgate (18-9-5, 13-5-2) took a 1-0 lead 49 seconds into the game on a goal by Mitchell.

 

Rensselaer (17-13-2, 11-8-1) tied the game at 3:43 when Vic Pereira one-timed a shot from the point and over the shoulder of Colgate junior goaltender Steve Silverthorn (Owen Sound, Ont.).

The Raiders took a 2-1 lead at 5:11 when junior Darryl McKinnon (Port Elgin, Ont.) picked Smyth’s rebound  in front of the net. Mitchell also assisted on the power play goal.

 

Smyth put the Raiders ahead 3-1 at 17:14 of the second period on a five on three. Smyth put in a Paul Kelley (Grand Forks, B.C.) rebound.

 

Rensselaer cut the lead 3-2 at 7:47 of the third period on a goal by Blake Pickett. Kevin Croxton and Ben Barr assisted on the goal.
