Hamilton, NY — The Colgate men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams swept Loyola, Marist and Niagara in tri-meet action at Lineberry Natatorium this afternoon. ‘It was an exciting meet with some great races, we received a total team contribution for the victory,’ remarked head coach Stephen Jungbluth. The men’s meet against Marist came down to the last race which Colgate was victorious in.
At the start of Saturday’s session, junior Aaron Weddle started the meet off with a lifetime best performance of 5:13.63 in the 500 yard freestyle. He shaved 21 seconds off his previous best mark. ‘This was the swim that ignited our team and inspired Aaron’s teammates to step up to the standard that he set by performing so far above our expectations,’ remarked Jungbluth. ‘That was the swim of the meet,’ he added.
The men’s 200 yard freestyle relay team of Zach Grobengeiser, Greg Dunlavey, David Traini and Andrew Kodesch set a new freshman record in a time of 1:27.98. David Hill replaced Traini on the 200 yard medley relay team that set a new freshman record in a time of 1:37.63.
Dunlavey, who had an excellent meet, swam a 53.06 in the 100 backstroke to better the former freshman mark by 0.33 seconds. He also took first in the 50 freestyle.
The Raiders’ athletes combined to set 37 new personal records in the meet.
Hill added to his accomplishments with four great swims in the 400 IM (4:14.55), 100 breaststroke (59.44), 200 breaststroke (2:10.26) and the 200 IM (1:57.22), all personal records.
Lane Ellis and Emily McAuliff won both boards in the men’s and women’s diving competition for the Raiders.
The two squads will now have a break for finals before they head to Aculpulco, Mexico on January sixth for their winter training trip.
