UPPER MARLBORO, MD ‘ Justin DeBerry tied a career-high with 29 points and Winston Davis scored a career-high with 23 points to lead Lafayette College (13-15) to an 89-76 upset win over Colgate (14-14) in the quarterfinal round of the Patriot League Tournament.
This was the third straight season that Colgate has been upset in the opening round as the Raiders had a five-game winning streak snapped.
Dave Hardy led Colgate with 23 points in his final collegiate game, while Mark Linebaugh netted 22, Andrew Zidar 11 and Howard Blue 10.
Lafayette had as good of a game as possible hitting 56 percent from the field (26-of-46), 53 percent from 3-point range (8-of-15) and .906 percent from the line (29-of-32).
Colgate, meanwhile, was .409 from the field, .348 from behind the arc and .875 from the charity stripe (14-of-16). Lafayette outrebounded the Raiders 35-25.
With Colgate leading 12-9 in the first half, Lafayette went on a 13-2 run for a 22-14 advantage with 9:38 remaining. The Leopards maintain their eight-point lead at halftime, 40-32.
In the second half, Lafayette opened a 21-point lead 65-44 with 9:11 left before the Raiders were able to cut the deficit to nine with 1:14 left.
