Last week was a busy week at Colgate University. While this is a mini-highlight of what was making news, you can skip this post and go right to comments to tell us your news from the past week. Here are just some of the things we were talking about:
Jenna Reinbold revisited India with a post titled The Ins and Outs of Experiencing India on the Worldwise Chronicle blog.
“I am still trying to reckon with what this means for my location on the insider-outsider spectrum. If there’s any authoritative knowledge I have gained as a result of my time in India, it’s the knowledge that I am in no position to be speaking in the guise of an insider. Yet, I am clearly no longer the same kind of outsider that I was two months ago.”
You can read more about insider and outsider status at the Chronicle. Or you can read about the entire trip as Colgate faculty still are posting about their reflections.
The blog is called Reflections from India, and there is still much to learn about and discuss. Go to the blog and pose a question, you never know who will answer.
Patriot League
As reported here, the Patriot League had a big announcement last week about allowing athletic merit aid for football beginning with the fall 2013 class.
Graduation rates of Patriot League member institutions are “at the very top,” noted President Jeffrey Herbst in an Inside Higher Ed article. He also said:
“Our experience with scholarships overall in sports has been positive, and achieved goals which we set out for when Colgate was initially debating offering merit-based athletic scholarships.”
As David J. Fernandez ’88 said on Twitter, “AWESOME! Time 2 compete with Syracuse! AMEN!” Tell us what you think of the announcement in the comments section.
Aging our Way
And finally, Meika Loe, associate professor of sociology and women’s studies, was in the news as she continues on a trek to talk about aging in America. Her new book, Aging Our Way: Lessons for Living from 85 and Beyond, explores 13 lessons on aging. Loe is taking those lessons and turning them into blog posts on Aging our Way.
What are your thoughts on aging?
