David Kaplan ’07, a political science major at Colgate, is an independent film producer who recently launched Animal Kingdom Films. The first film associated with his new company was recently named a grand jury winner at the prestigious South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas.
Not a bad start for a fledgling company in an extremely competitive field.
Kaplan is an executive producer of Short Term 12, which won the SXSW prize for narrative feature. The film, directed by Deston Cretton, earned a rave review from Variety magazine.
Kaplan, who also works as a financing consultant and sales agent in his role at Animal Kingdom Films, was the executive producer for Joe Swanberg’s Drinking Buddies and put together the financing for Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ Toy’s House, which was an official selection at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival.
Kaplan talks a bit about his path in the independent film world here.
