As the debt-limit debate went into hyperdrive after news of a deal filtered out of the nation’s capital on Sunday night, Colgate economics professor Thomas Michl urged political leaders to tone down the demagoguery and focus on the real issue at hand: creating jobs.
Michl, whose teaching specialties include the political economy and labor economics, wrote a commentary piece for The (Albany) Times Union newspaper that appeared Sunday.
He said Republicans and Democrats are using misconceptions about the national debt to further their partisan agendas. He suggests that the real threat to our prosperity is premature fiscal austerity, and now is not the time to “slam on the fiscal brakes.”
