HAMILTON, NY – The Colgate University men’s soccer team scored one the biggest upsets in school history after they defeated 12th ranked Saint Bonaventure 1-0 in the first overtime period Saturday night at Van Doren Field.
Three minutes into the overtime period Colgate was awarded an indirect kick inside the box after a dangerous play.
Zack Stuppy (York, Maine/York) set the pass to sophomore forward Jon Cook (Oneonta, NY/Laurens Central) who sent a low rocket in through Saint Bonaventure’s wall and past the keeper.
Both teams had their chances in the first and second half with Colgate outplaying Saint Bonaventure for most of regulation. Colgate had one break-away chance but the shot went wide.
Colgate out shot the Bonnies 16-10 and out cornered them 11-5.
Sean Eyde made nine stops in net for Saint Bonaventure but took the loss. Will Martin (Excelsior, MN/Breck) made six saves and earned his first win of the season.
The win gives Colgate a 1-0-1 record and drops Saint Bonaventure to 2-1-0.
Colgate will be in action Tuesday night when they host Syracuse at 7 p.m. at Van Doren field.
