HAMPTON, VA. ‘ Junior righthander Elena Isaac pitched four and one-third innings of no-hit ball to lead the Colgate University softball team (1-0) to a 6-1 win over Fordham University (0-1) in a five-inning game Friday at the Hampton University Tournament.
Isaac, who became the first 20-game winner in school history last spring, finished with a two-hitter while striking out four and walking three.
The Raiders scored two runs in the top of the second inning for a 2-0 lead. With one out, Natalie Rawson singled down the third base line, and advanced to second on Erin Hanna’s sacrifice bunt. First baseman Caitlin Thistle singled up the middle to score Rawson with the first run, and catcher Stacy Mui doubled to center field driving in Thistle.
Colgate broke the game open in the fourth inning with four runs to take a 6-0. Hanna opened the frame with an infield single, and pinch runner Tara McDevitt advanced to second on a pass ball. After Thistle struck out, McDevitt moved to third on another pass ball, and then scored on Mui’s infield single.
Freshman right fielder Erica Anderson reached on an infield hit, moving Mui to second base. After Rachel Smith was safe on a fielder’s choice, and Mui out at third base, sophomore Dorothy Donaldson doubled to center field to drive in Anderson with the second run of the inning. Colgate’s last two runs were unearned with Smith scoring on a fielding error and Donaldson coming home a throwing error.
Isaac took a no-hitter into the bottom of the fifth inning. After Sama Crocker grounded out, Brandy Kean broke up the no-hit effort with a double to right center. After advancing to third on a ground out, Kean scored on Jam Chastain’s single to center field.
Mui was 2-for-3 for the Raiders with a pair of RBI, while Donaldson was 1-for-2 with a RBI and Thistle 1-for-3 with a RBI.
