Colgate University President Jeffrey Herbst today announced the selection of Brian Hutzley as vice president for finance and administration for Colgate University, effective December 2.
Hutzley brings nearly 30 years of business and management experience gained in higher education and the private sector.
Most recently, he served as vice chancellor for shared services and regional economic development at the State University of New York (SUNY). He also had served as chief financial officer for the SUNY system, overseeing a $12 billion annual budget and the overall administration and operations of the 64-campus system. His administrative responsibilities have included oversight of the offices of finance and budget, business affairs, university accounting, and financial aid.
In addition, he has designed and implemented a strategic planning funding process for SUNY, and served on the SUNY Chancellor’s Leadership Advisory Committee, as well as the Information Technology Transformation, Resource Allocation, and Budget Task Force.
For six years prior to joining SUNY’s system administration, Hutzley was vice president for business and finance at SUNY Delhi, where his responsibilities included strategic visioning and oversight of budget and planning, computer information systems, accounting, purchasing, food service, and the campus bookstore.
“Brian brings a valuable and very comprehensive set of skills and experiences to Colgate,” said Herbst, who credited the search committee, led by Provost and Dean of the Faculty Doug Hicks, for working swiftly and effectively. “We are extremely fortunate to have Brian join us, especially as we plan for and manage the many resources — human, capital, and physical — that will be needed to realize Colgate’s strategic plan and to manage the many changes that the future will bring.”
Before working in higher education, Hutzley served as director of finance and strategy for Mead in Sidney, N.Y., where he led acquisitions and alliances processes, budgeting, credit and collection, and accounting services. Before Mead, he held management positions at Amphenol Aerospace, AT&T, and NCR.
“I am honored to begin my new endeavor working with the university’s prominent and talented team,” said Hutzley, who recalled having worked for and with several Colgate alumni over the years. “The Colgate people I have known have had sound leadership skills and dedication to their communities, and they have always credited Colgate for the solid foundation of skills that allowed for such success. While I am grateful for the opportunities given to me by the State University and Chancellor Nancy Zimpher, I am now excited to work with all who have made Colgate such an extraordinary institution.”
Hutzley has been deeply involved in university and community service throughout his career, serving on the Sidney Community Foundation Board of Directors, the Otsego County Chamber Board of Directors, Boy Scouts of America Otschodela Council Board of Directors, the Leadership Institute of Delaware County, and on many other civic and philanthropic boards and committees.
He holds a bachelor of arts degree from Michigan State University, and a master of business administration from Syracuse University. He plans to relocate to Hamilton from his current home in Gilbertsville, NY.
