Scouting the Pioneers
Sacred Heart tied Bemidji State last weekend by scores of 1-1 on Friday night and 2-2 Saturday night. Three different players scored for the Pioneers in sophomore forward Garrett Larson, senior defenseman Les Hrapchak and junior forward Chuck Metcalfe.
Sacred Heart was 16-14-4 last season with a 15-8-3 mark in the MAAC for third place. The Pioneers return 23 letterwinners from last year’s squad while losing four.
Predicted to finish third in the MAAC behind Mercyhurst and Quinnipiac, Sacred Heart’s Martin Paquet was named the MAAC Preseason Player of the Year along with Adam Tackaberry from Mercyhurst. In addition, Eddy Ferhi was named the MAAC Preseason Goalie of the Year.
Last Time Out
Colgate defeated Sacred Heart 8-2 on October 14, 2000. Senior Scooter Smith tallied two goals while seniors Brad D’Arco and P.J. Yedon and junior Rob Brown added assists. Junior goaltender David Cann made seven saves in 20 minutes of action. Former Raiders Chad MacDonald and Sean Nolan also tallied two goals in the rout while Jason Lefevre made nine saves for the win.
ECAC Honors For Smith
Senior Scooter Smith was named the ECAC Player of the Week Monday for his one-goal, two-assist performance against Connecticut last weekend. It is Smith’s first Player of the Week honor.
The 1,000 Save Club
Junior goaltender David Cann became just the 15th Colgate goaltender to achieve 1,000 saves in Saturday night’s loss to Connecticut. Cann needed 12 saves entering the game and finished with 18.
The Number One Not Too Kind to the Raiders
Colgate lost its third straight game Saturday night by one goal. Last season, the Raiders played in 13 one-goal games, seven of which were wins.
Multiple Point Games For Smith, Doyle, Yashin
Senior Scooter Smith, junior Kyle Doyle and sophomore Dmitry Yashin all recorded multiple point games in Saturday night’s loss to UConn. Smith tallied a goal and two assists, while Doyle added two goals and Yashin had a goal and an assist.
The Returning Raiders

Senior Steve Silversides will serve as captain of the 2002-03 squad while senior Brad D’Arco and junior Rob Brown have been elected assistant captains.
Mormina Selected In 2002 NHL Entry Draft
Sophomore defenseman Joey Mormina was selected in the sixth round by the Philadelphia Flyers with the 193rd pick in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. He is the highest Raider drafted since 1991 when Bruce Gardiner was selected in the sixth round with the 131st overall pick by the St. Louis Blues.
Scoping out the Smyths
Although freshmen Jon and Ryan Smyth have the same last name the two players are not related.
The Silver Lining
Even though sophomore Steve Silverthorn picked up the loss in the 6-5 double overtime loss to Nebraska-Omaha on October 11, the goaltender make a career-high 44 saves, including 18 in double overtime to keep the Raiders in the game. It was Silverthorn’s second collegiate start.
