PROVIDENCE, R.I.‘ The Brown University men’s hockey team scored five unanswered goals to erase a two-goal deficit and defeat Colgate, 5-2 Saturday evening at Meehan Auditorium. With the victory, the Bears snapped a nine-game winless streak against the Raiders.
Colgate (11-14-3, 6-10-2 ECAC) took an early 2-0 lead with back-to-back goals scored just 1:34 apart in the first five minutes of the game. Scooter Smith notched a power-play goal at the 3:28 mark of the opening period, while Adam Mitchell struck at 5:02.
However, Brown (11-10-3, 9-7-2 ECAC) chipped away at the lead just 2:52 later when junior Scott Ford scored on the power-play with a slap shot from the left point. Junior Brent Robinson and senior Paul Esdale each assisted on the goal.
With the clock ticking down at the end of the first period, the Bears knotted the contest at 2-2 with just 15 seconds left before the first intermission. Moving down the ice on a fast rush, Esdale tipped in the rebound of a shot by sophomore Les Haggett. Robinson earned the other assist on the goal.
The Bears opened up the 2-2 game in the second period, scoring two goals as Brown held onto a 4-2 lead heading into the final stanza. In a quick succession of shots, freshman Rugo Santini scored his first collegiate goal to give Bruno a 3-2 lead. Linemates Chris Swon and Pascal Denis each earned assists on the goal, which was scored 6:54 into the period. Les Haggett scored Brown’s fourth goal at 18:50.
Brown’s Jason Wilson scored the fifth and final goal of the game at 10:43 of the third period.
For the game, Steve Silverthorn made eight saves while allowing two goals in 30 minutes of action and David Cann recorded 14 saves while allowing three goals in 30 minutes of action. Brown’s Yann Danis stopped 28 shots in net.
