COLGATE EXPECTS 2,500 FOR
FAMILY WEEKEND 1999

HAMILTON ‘ Family Weekend at Colgate University, a highlight of the fall semester, will bring more than 2,500 family members to campus September 24-26 for receptions, athletic events, theater, concerts, exhibitions, and other presentations.
Large numbers of parents, mostly of first-year students, will begin arriving Friday afternoon, September 24. That evening, Colgate students in University Theater will present their own interpretations of three Shakespeare plays in shortened versions, to be repeated several times throughout the weekend.
On Saturday morning, after various information sessions and informal conversation with faculty members in departmental open houses, families will attend a ‘state of the college’ session with President Charles Karelis and Deans Jane Pinchin and Michael Cappeto. Saturday afternoon, the men’s soccer team will take on Bucknell, and the Center for Ethics and World Societies will sponsor a colloquium titled ‘Legacies of Vietnam’ that ties into the first-year students’ summer reading assignment, Vietnamerica: The War Comes Home by Thomas Bass.
Saturday’s program also lists the Farmers Market on the Hamilton Village Green and a walking tour of the historic town. The Colgate Thirteen, Swinging ‘Gates, and Resolutions a cappella singing groups will perform in Cotterell Court Saturday night.
Religious services, a fun run/walk, and various brunches are among Sunday morning’s activities. Sunday afternoon in the Chapel, pianist Andre Ponochevny will perform a free concert featuring an all-Chopin program.
