HAMILTON, N.Y.‘Junior goaltender David Cann recorded his second career shutout with 23 saves as the Colgate men’s ice hockey team defeated Brown 3-0 Friday night at Starr Rink.
Brown (4-2-0, 4-2-0) held Colgate to only 16 total shots, but failed to convert on its chances. The Raiders (5-6-1, 2-3 ECAC) killed all 10 shorthanded situations they faced en route to stopping a three–game slide.
‘Our best game of the season, without question,’ head coach Don Vaughan. ‘Our penalty killing really played great tonight, and there was a lot of momentum in our favor because of that. Great effort from the goalie out.’
Colgate scored once in every period, led by senior Scooter Smith’s two–goal effort. Smith scored on the power play two minutes into the middle frame to give the Raiders a 2-0 edge. He later put the icing on the victory with a one-timer in the slot at 14:58 of the third period.
Highly touted Bears goaltender Yann Danis stopped a meager 13 shots, while his counterpart Cann closed the door on all 23 shots he faced.
Junior defenseman Rob Brown scored Colgate’s first goal just as a Raider power play expired. The goal marked the first time this season that Brown surrendered a game’s opening tally.
Senior P.J. Yedon registered two assists and received the game’s third star in the victory.
