Torch Medals honor a Colgate faculty or staff member who made a meaningful impact on an alum during their time at Colgate. His sharp outlook – focused on justice and equality for minorities in particular – added a much-needed layer of perspective to my developing mind at a primarily white institution. His teachings found an even deeper place within my conscience via his Discourses of Whiteness class, opening my eyes to taboo concepts of white supremacy and antiquated social paradigms.
