PeacePlayers International, the global nonprofit group co-founded by Brendan Tuohey ’96, is one of the groups that will benefit from a charitable gift fund established by Britain’s Prince William and his fiancée, Kate Middleton.
The soon-to-be-wed royal couple established the fund in lieu
of wedding gifts that the public might want to send.
During their visit to
Belfast on March 8, the couple met representatives of the Northern Ireland branch of
PeacePlayers International, and it ended up being chosen as one of 26
recipients of the fund.
Tuohey and his brother Sean launched PeacePlayers in 2001, and since its
founding the group has reached more than 52,000 individuals worldwide as it uses the game of basketball
to unite and educate young people in divided communities.
In Northern Ireland, the group works with young people between the ages of 8
and 25 in Protestant and Catholic communities. It works to overcome sectarianism
through a range of integrated sports activities, peace education, and
leadership development opportunities.
“We are grateful for the royal couple’s belief in PeacePlayers International to
make the world a better place,” said Tuohey, who serves as the group’s
executive director.
Those wanting to make a donation can visit www.royalweddingcharityfund.org
or send a text message to 70294. PeacePlayers is listed under “changing lives
through arts and sport.”
