For students taking midterm exams this past week, several surprises were able to brighten their busy days. For one, the temperatures rose and the sun greeted everyone who took advantage of the fortuitous weather by studying outside on the quad.
Many are still stunned by the mild winter we are having. Nevertheless, the warmness of the past few days has really elevated students’ spirits during this hectic week. Is it possible that this beautiful weather will hold and provide for a sooner than anticipated spring? Colgate students can only hope that their snow boots and winter jackets can be stored away for good and will not have to make a reappearance after spring break.
Another surprise for students was the announcement of the musical guest who will be performing for Spring Party Weekend, a concert event that precedes the workload and studying associated with finals week. This year’s guest will be Avicii, one of our top choices. Students are excited that the Spring Party Weekend committee was able to secure this popular DJ for the event later this spring.
An additional anticipated event coming up is the lecture by Richard Branson, Virgin Group founder and president, who will be speaking as part of the Kerschner Family Series Global Leaders at Colgate this spring. Branson’s lecture will surely be inspiring to students who are looking into business and have the ambition to be entrepreneurs.
This week, I had my first experience working as a greeter for the Office of Admission. My first family was actually one I have personally known for years. A friend of mine, and a fellow graduate from the Syracuse Christian Brothers Academy Class of 2011 is looking to transfer colleges, and she came to visit Colgate.
I spoke with her and her mother about life at Colgate, and answered all their questions. It was nice to be able to converse with them and to see how interested they were in Colgate as an option for the upcoming fall semester. I enjoyed our conversation and I am excited to continue to work as a greeter for other prospective families this spring.
I hope everyone has a fun and safe spring break!
