Hamilton – Marya Hornbacher, author of the book Wasted, spoke at Colgate University about body image and eating disorders on February 8. Wasted is a ‘vivid, emotionally wrenching memoir’ of the author’s own struggle with anorexia and bulimia. It tells the gripping story of how she stepped ‘through the looking glass into a netherworld where up is down and food is greed, where death is honor and flesh is weak.’ The lecture was held in the Hall of Presidents in the Student Union. A brief book signing followed.
Hornbacher has received much acclaim for Wasted and has made countless media appearances including on Good Morning America. She has been a speaker for Eating Disorders Awareness and Prevention (EDAP), a national organization, and she has been featured on video in a major exhibit in the Science Museum of Minnesota.
On the school level, Hornbacher has been speaking at high schools for a number of years, and has lectured at several colleges in the past. She currently works as a freelance editor and writer. She is the winner of the White Award for Best Feature Story of 1993 for Wasted.
This event was part of Colgate University’s ‘Love Your Body Week,’ which occurred from February 1 through 8. The week also featured a series of events addressing body image, self esteem, and eating disorders.
