Hello, Colgate Community Member.
Let’s begin Thursday’s message with some numbers. As of midnight last night, we have received 2,489 results from 2,507 student arrival weekend PCR tests, and 18 are positive for COVID-19. Along with those now in isolation, we have approximately 36 students in close contact quarantine.
Our thoughts are with them, and we hope to see everyone back on campus as soon as possible. Again, these numbers are well within anticipated ranges, and I want to thank all of you — whether you’re in isolation, contact quarantine, or universal quarantine — for keeping your Commitment to Community Health and taking care of each other.
Speaking of taking care, I was watching students sled down the library hill today, and all I could think was … “It’s so cold.” My friends in D.C. say I live Beyond the Wall. I usually roll my eyes, but not this weekend.
Wind chill tomorrow morning is expected to be -25 to -35 degrees, and cold conditions will persist throughout the day. Doc Miller says that frostbite and hypothermia are possible, so take precautions:
- Wear appropriate layers of clothing, covering your body, ears, nose, fingers and toes.
- Stay out of the cold and wind as much as possible.
- Stay well hydrated, and avoid alcohol — it reduces shivering (one of the body’s ways to stay warm). Don’t smoke. It decreases blood flow to your hands and feet.
- If you develop skin pain or skin discoloration, please go inside and take off any wet clothing. Warm the affected skin by putting on dry clothing and drinking warm liquids, but do NOT rub the skin or use a heating pad or a hair dryer to warm the skin. That can further damage the skin before your feeling returns.
- If you develop skin blisters, significant swelling, violent shivering, difficulty speaking or moving, seek medical attention.
That’s a long message, but Mother Nature is going to give a quiz tomorrow, so I hope you were reading closely.
Be safe, stay warm, and I’ll talk to you later.

Take Note
To help with printing during universal quarantine, ITS is making three printers accessible during outdoor recreation times via the web print infrastructure. Starting tomorrow, Jan. 29, printing will be available during recreation time. Log on to webprint.colgate.edu and select Gate-FindMe-Printer (virtual). Upload your job like you normally would using webprint, go to Jobs Pending Release, and release your print job for pickup at Case-EastFoyer, Case-FlexRoom, or Coop-Lab. If you upload your print job from your computer, you can then log in from your phone when you are at the location and select print. Additional information can be found at webprint.colgate.edu.
Beginning tomorrow, Friday, Jan. 29 there will be new recreation time Colgate Cruiser routes:
Friday, Jan. 29– Feb. 4: Minimum Service and Outdoor Time (10 a.m–2 p.m.) only.
Friday, Feb. 5–Sunday, Feb. 7: Minimum, Outdoor, and Shopping Runs only.
NOTE: Please download the Colgate Cruiser Transloc app to receive real time location updates on Cruiser locations.
The Office of LGBTQ+ Initiatives will be hosting a series of listening sessions, Feb. 1–2 and Feb. 8–9, to identify issues affecting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQ+) students on campus. Email Tiffany Lane, director of LGBTQ+ initiatives with questions.
Applications for orientation link staff are due on Sunday, Jan. 31, at 11:59 p.m. Serving as a link is a great way to give back to the Colgate community and help welcome hundreds of new students, who will join us in August. Members of the orientation team must be enthusiastic, approachable, dependable, and mature. They must possess integrity, strong communication skills, and a demonstrated capacity to be consistently inclusive.
Reminder: Employees are required to notify the Human Resources Department and complete this form for close contact quarantine, travel quarantine, or for isolation in the case of a positive COVID test.
Due to forecasted extreme wind chill, the following events have been cancelled: geocaching, Friday 1/29; drytooling, Saturday 1/30; sledding, Saturday 1/30; and tree climbing, Sunday 1/31.
Registration for Saturday skate skiing and Sunday cross country skiing is closed. If you enrolled, you will receive updates should there be any weather-related changes to these events.
A Closing Thought
Stay warm!
