A Contextualized/Integrated Approach to Language Learning

Colgate students Lucy Brewer ’26 and Kaitlin Maratea ’25, along with faculty members Ramakrishnan (ROLA) and Sklyar (University Studies) presented at the 2024 AATF Convention held in San Diego from July 7–10.

This roundtable focused on conceptualizing and putting into practice the interconnectedness of language, culture, and texts/target language narratives in language pedagogy at the high school and university levels. The round table also prompted educators to reflect on the promises and challenges of integrating language, culture, and texts in their pedagogical practices and curricula. The goal of all four papers was to advocate for an integrated approach to language learning with the clear understanding that:

  • the broader definition of culture encompasses language and texts within it;
  • language pedagogy remains elastic, flexible, and fluid in our approach to presenting texts, culture, and the linguistic dimension;
  • language, culture, and texts evolve with time and the movement of people across the globe.
