Dear Colgate Community Members,
I write to provide some information about the Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) that you may have seen in the news recently. While there have been no confirmed cases in New York as of today, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is monitoring the appearance of the illness in at least four other states.
Colgate Student Health Services is closely following updates from the CDC and the New York State Department of Health (DOH), and we will be sure to communicate with campus should there be additional information to share.
In addition, the U.S. State Department has issued a travel warning for the entire country of China, encouraging all individuals to avoid nonessential travel to the country.
Students who have traveled to Hubei Province in China — and particularly the capital city of Wuhan — since early January are asked to contact Colgate Student Health Services at 315-228-7750 for additional guidance.
Faculty and staff who have traveled to Hubei Province should contact their healthcare service provider.
Colgate has created an FAQ about the coronavirus, symptoms, and common-sense protections. Please feel free to call 315-228-7750 or email studenthealth@colgate.edu if you have any individual questions or concerns.
I understand that news of emerging illnesses can be unsettling, but I would like to reassure our community that campus health and safety professionals are steadfast in their monitoring of the national and international developments related to the coronavirus.
Regards,
Dr. Merrill Miller
Adjunct Professor of the Health Sciences and Director of Student Health Services
