Elizabeth Marlowe, associate professor of ancient and medieval art and program director of museum studies, Robert Nemes,
professor of history and chair of the Department of History, and their children recreated Interior of an Inn with Four Figures. This painting is featured in the current exhibit Works in Progress: Original Materials from the Netherlands. View the exhibition online here.
Marlowe states “many of the recreations people have posted incorporate rolls of toilet paper in creative ways, as the iconic consumer good of this moment in the pandemic. I immediately saw a way to put toilet paper to good use!”
Picker Art Gallery Assistant Educator, Njeri Jennings, was inspired by the Getty Challenge to recreate an artwork from the Picker collection. She chose Poul Edvard Nielsen's Gummitrae (Rubber Tree) using only objects from home. "The soothing colors and bold lines allow the viewer to remember the peace plants and books can bring to life," said Jennings.
Kaytlynn Lynch, the interim curator at the Longyear Museum of Anthropology, chose to recreate Sapho (Sappho), (1844) by Théodore Chassériau, also based on things she had at home: a Halloween wig, a Guitar Hero guitar, a similar dress, and various embellishments. Lynch says, “my favorite aspect of taking part in this challenge was gathering all of the items I needed to make it happen — it was like putting together a puzzle!”
