- If using a phone, shoot in landscape mode with the phone sideways for a 16:9 frame
- Choose a location with minimal background noise. Turn off anything that you can that might make noise. Keep away from windows and try to choose a location where you have control over the lighting.
- Choose a background that is not too busy or distracting and that will create some depth in the image. Try to keep at least 6ft distance between subject and background. Avoid a background that has windows. Try to get more light on your subject and less on the background. Use practical lights like a desk lamp or floor lamp to put extra light on subject if needed. Using Colgate’s backgrounds is also a good option if using Zoom to capture video.
- Keep subject close to camera (within 5 ft) for clear audio and to create good separation between subject and background.
- Keep the camera as stable as possible. Use a tripod if possible.
- Keep camera height equal to or slightly above subject’s eye line. If using a laptop on a desk use a box to get the camera up higher.
- Frame subject either in center of screen, or slightly to the left or right of center. Be sure there’s not too much negative space above the subject’s head but also be sure to not cut off the top or bottom of subject.
