For the past several years, the athletics department has honored National Girls and Women in Sports Day by welcoming local children, grades K–6, to Sanford Field House for a free multi-sport clinic with the Colgate women's athletic teams. "At the clinic, we had 12 women's teams and hosted more than 75 boys and girls," said Brigid St. Leger, interim assistant athletics director for marketing and fan engagement. The children engaged with the women's sports teams in a variety of activities including tennis, volleyball, lacrosse, track and field, rugby, and softball, among many others.
Afterwards, everyone enjoyed pizza, ice cream, free basketballs, and tickets to the women's basketball and ice hockey games.
A wonderful event for kids! It's great that Colgate puts in such effort for the community and gives young children the opportunity to experience the various sports. The women athletes are terrific role models for our kids!
Aaron Solle, operations and communications manager, off-campus study
I really love the women in sports event because it gives kids of all genders and ages exposure to various types of women’s sports they may not yet know exist.
Anna Unger ’22, Women's Field Hocky
Hosting the National Girls and Women in Sports Day event at Colgate is an amazing opportunity for our athletes. It is a chance for the women on our teams to show young people in the community the impact that sports have on their lives.
Jessica Deitrick, Head Women's Rowing Coach
I have come to Girls and Women in Sports Day for the last few years. I really enjoyed learning about new sports to me, like rowing and running, from the Colgate athletes. It was also nice to learn some new things about the sports I already play like soccer.
Morgan Amir, 11 years old, 5th grade, HCS
The legacy of women in sports continues in the Colgate athletics department. Three women coaches (April Cornell, field hockey; Marissa Lamison-Myers, softball; and Chelsea Walkland, ice hockey) welcomed babies with their spouses or partners within 30 days of each other this winter. Congratulations and may the celebration of women and girls in sports continue.
