Cultural Exchange Program for Xiamen University Students

Overview

Colgate University invites Xiamen University students to participate in a uniquely designed cultural exchange program of four weeks. In addition to lectures and trips that familiarize students with American culture, democracy, and financial systems, students take English language courses throughout their stay.

Students do not receive academic credit from Colgate University, but they do receive credit from Xiamen University.

Logistics
Students must apply for a B2 visa and pay for their own flights to and from Syracuse Hancock International Airport. Colgate University provides shuttles to and from the airport at the beginning and end of the program, as well as transportation for all programmed trips.

Dates: June 23, 2013 - July 20, 2013
Fee: $4,875 per person*

*Assumes a minimum of 25 participants.

The fee includes all expenses related to the program, including housing, meals on campus and during trips within the U.S., and health insurance coverage for international students. Students are only responsible for incidental expenses.

The application deadline is tentatively scheduled for late February.

Within the Classroom

Talks and Lectures
Each week, the program includes a variety of talks and lectures on American culture, government, and economics. Topics include:
  • American financial and political systems
  • American economic and social history
  • U.S. foreign policy and the U.S.–China relationship
  • Gender and racial relations in America
  • American culture
  • The American graduate school experience
English Language Course
The 17 hours that students spend in the classroom each week are divided into morning and afternoon sessions. The morning session involves speaking and listening comprehension, while the afternoon promotes reading and writing skills. A variety of topics from the talks, lectures, and travels are integrated into these sessions.

Beyond the Classroom

Off-Campus Trips
The program includes two overnight trips: one to New York City focusing on American financial systems and another to Washington, D.C., focusing on American democracy and foreign relations. Additionally, students travel to Cornell University, Niagara Falls, the Carousel Mall, and the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

Recreation
Students have access to all of Colgate’s recreational and academic facilities, ones that include our state-of-the-art library, fitness center, basketball courts, golf course, hiking trails, and swimming pool. The program also includes trips to the university’s boathouse, visualization lab, and stellar observatory.

Additionally, students have opportunities to connect with Colgate University students and the Hamilton community, including weekly lunches with the Hamilton Rotary Club and visits to local families.
