network account FAQs for students Skip Navigation
Below are the most commonly asked questions from students about their computing accounts at Colgate.

E-mail

How do I get my account? Your Google E-mail account is created when you are accepted to the university. You may set up your account password at accounts.colgate.edu after you have received notification that your account has been created.
How long will I have access after I graduate? If you do not sign up for E-mail for Life, then the account will only remain active for one calendar year after you graduate. At that time, the account will be turned off. Visit the alumni website for more information on Email for Life.
Can I keep my E-mail account after I graduate? You can keep your @colgate.edu email address by contacting the Alumni Affairs Office. This program allows you access to your E-mail account, but does not include the entire Google suite of apps such as Google Drive, Google Sites, and others.  Visit the alumni website for more information on Email for Life.

How can I transfer my E-mail, Google Drive content, or Google sites?

To transfer to another Gmail account, you can use Gmail’s Mail Fetcher tool to move your email.  This will also continue to forward email from the old account until it is finally disabled.  If you want to transfer to a non-Gmail account just follow the appropriate steps on this page.

Transferring contacts is a two step process.  First you need to export the contacts, and then import them into the desired account.

Transferring Google Drive documents involve sharing documents with another account and declaring them as owners of the files.  Follow the steps on this page to change ownership of the files on your drive to another Google account.

To transfer a Google site is similar to how Drive documents are handled, where there is an owner of the file, or in this case site.  To change ownership follow the steps on this page.

If you would like to download all your emails, files, and other things from your Google account you can use the Google Takeout utility provided by Google.  From this utility it’s as easy as checking off which services you want to make a copy of, specifying that you want to be emailed a link as the delivery method, waiting for everything to be compiled, and then downloading it.
What happens if I transfer and enroll at another educational institution? A student leaving the university to transfer to another college keeps their account for 60 days following the drop/add period of the first semester that he or she is not enrolled in any classes.
