Axis TV Content Manager Overview

Axis TV Content Manager is a browser-based application that gives users the ability to add, edit, and schedule content on Colgate’s digital signage system.

Audience

This tutorial is for users of the Axis TV administrative and authoring software.

Background

AxisTV is Colgate University's digital sign management solution. This solution consists of server software that is used to manage sign content remotely. Server software updates client software on a Channel Player, a small PC connected directly to a Plasma/LCD TV.

Requirements

  • Web Browser (Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer)
  • A local account on the server (not Active Directory based)
  • Mac or PC Operating System
  • SilverLight plug-in for the appropriate browser

Details

Logging in
Using one of the above-listed browsers, navigate to axistv.colgate.edu. Enter the credentials supplied to you. You may be prompted to change your password.
Working with layouts
Layout
At the top level, each screen (TV) has a specific layout. A layout consists of content blocks — rectangular areas which are used to position content on a screen. A screen may contain multiple content blocks or just one. To access layouts, navigate to: Configure >> Channel Players >> Layouts
Content block
Each content block is associated with a playlist, a group of content that is organized in the order that it is displayed. A content block is assigned a specific playlist (denoted as "P" with a number following, such as "P29" for playlist 29). The selected playlist determines what content plays in that block.
Playlist
A playlist consists of individual content objects — images, slides, video, tickers, feeds, etc. Playlists may share common content objects or resources. Playlist content may be reordered and edited. Navigate to Now Playing >> Playlists.
Text bulletin
A text bulletin is similar to a PowerPoint slide — a simple text message that may be assigned to a playlist and, by extension, to a content block in a layout. Bulletins may have a variety of different backgrounds and layouts. These are selected during creation. Navigate to Create >> Text Bulletin.
Working with video
Axis TV can display short video (three to five minutes). Normally, it is inadvisable to include sound, as the volume is rarely audible in digital signage environments. Instead, use captions or graphics to highlight any items that would normally be spoken or announced.

Video greater than 20 MB should be uploaded using Axis TV Desktop. The final encoded format, ready for upload, should be WMV2 (Windows Media Video 8) with a resolution of 720 X 480. To add a video, log in to Axis TV Content Manager.
  • Create a new Media Bulletin  [ Create >> Media Bulletin ]
  • Provide a unique title for your media bulletin.
  • Upload your 20 MB file or less using the Browse and Upload File NOW feature.
- OR-
  • Select your file from Choose an Existing File. Then choose Pick Existing NOW.
  • Choose Next
  • Select the playlist or playlists to add the media bulletin to. Control-Click to select multiple playlists.
  • Set the schedule as desired.
  • Click Finished!

Free Form Editor

The Free Form Editor is used to create text bulletins with pre-fabricated (or no) backgrounds.
  • To begin, select Create Message
  • Provide a unique name for your bulletin.
  • Choose the appropriate Aspect Ratio ( 4:3 more or less square, or 16:9 wide screen)
  • Choose a Background Folder ('colgate' recommended)
  • Choose a Background.
  • Choose either the Text or Graphic radio button. You may insert one or the other in a section but not both.
  • Choose Add Section. Click inside of the preview box to create the section.
Text
  • Move and resize the section text element as desired.
  • Enter the text you would like to appear in the Section Properties.
  • Select font color, size, and type. Choose the desired text alignment (left justified, center justified, right justified).
Note: When adding text, be sure that the text color you choose provides good contrast between the text and the background.

Graphic
  • Upload a graphic or select one from the existing library.
  • Position and resize the graphic section as needed.
You can adjust the layering of graphic and text sections by selecting a section and choosing To Front or To Back from the Advanced menu.

Choose Save Message when complete. You may then access the message you created from the Axis TV Content Manager.

Template Editor

A template is a fixed guide used to control the layout and look and feel of a bulletin to maintain consistency among similar messages. Template use can be restricted by user or users. Template features may be locked to prevent editing, such as background and font attributes.

Creating a template is nearly identical to creating a Free Form bulletin. Follow the steps above to create a Free Form bulletin.

When complete, choose Save Template. The template will then be available in the Axis TV Content Manager for your use.
