Teaching Experience

Colgate University                                                                                                                               University Librarian and Professor in the Libraries, June 2005-present.  Provide vision, foster collaboration, and build productive partnerships with a broad range of constituencies to maximize the centrality of the new Case Library and Geyer Center for Information Technology to the University’s mission.

Saint Michael’s College                                                                                                                         Director, Library and Information Services,  July 2002-May 2005.  Provided participative leadership for services, collections, and personnel.  Used facilitative management to restore staff confidence and engagement following the dissolution of a merger with IT.  Renewed library identity as the intellectual center of campus and fostered new levels of partnership with IT.  Rehabilitated support of student research by facilitating the creation of a formal information literacy program. 

Middlebury College                                                                                                                               Assistant College Librarian for Budgets and Collections, July 1999-June 2002.   Managed all library budgets, advising Dean of Libraries and Information Services and library department heads on priorities and allocations for operations and collections.  Played a lead role on planning committee for new library and technology center. 

Collection Management Librarian, January 1981-June 1999.  Led the library's collection management program overseeing subject liaison librarians and partnering with faculty to build and manage collections in new and existing areas of curricular excellence.  Oversaw digital database licensing and management.  Partnered with instructional technologists on acquiring content for multimedia.

Reference/Catalog Librarian, September 1980-January 1981.  Carried out reference, instruction, departmental liaison, and cataloging work.  

Gordon Avenue Library, Charlottesville, Virginia                                                                                Head Librarian, June 1979-July1980.  Managed all library functions, activities, programs, and staff in the largest of six branch libraries.  Worked with the University of Virginia Graduate School of Nursing to develop collaborative community health programs.  

Library of Tibetan Works and Archives, Dharamsala, and Drepung Loseling Library Society, Mundgod, India                                                                                                                                       Library Consultant and English Teacher, October 1978-May 1979.   Provided training to Tibetan staff in providing reference services.  Created a Himalayan-centric classification system for non-Tibetan language publications.  Taught English to Tibetan Buddhist monks. 

Main Library, Jefferson-Madison Regional System, Charlottesville, Virginia                                     Reference Librarian, October 1977-September 1978.  Carried out reference research for individuals, branch libraries, and bookmobile.

Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, Washington, D.C.                                                             Research Librarian, September 1976-August 1977.   Implemented, maintained, and trained colleagues in use of new library technology resources such as the OCLC database, mediated database search services BRS, DIALOG, and SDC, and the in-house KWIC/KWOC index to banking materials collected from a wide range of organizations.  Created formal banking legislative histories and conducted research for the Director of the Corporation. 

American Bankers Association, Washington, D.C.                                                                               Special Projects Librarian, May 1976-August 1976.  Developed specialized classification system for ABA documents to enhance bibliographic organization and control.
