Internship Credit Program

The Internship Credit Program (ICP) opens as many internship opportunities to you as possible by allowing you access to internships that require participation to be credit-bearing.

ICP Information

ICP allows you to earn "supplemental credit" at Colgate for an internship that you participate in, provided that your internship meets certain criteria. The credit is purely supplemental to your transcript and may not be used to fulfill the requirements of a Colgate degree.

This program is our response to the fact that many employers require that their internship count for course credit at your school. To make a long story short, some employers have this requirement so that they can comply with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), and we've created this program so that you are eligible for these opportunities.

Eligibility

Not all internships can earn you course credit at Colgate. To be eligible for the ICP, your circumstances must match the following:
  • You must be a currently matriculated student who has completed at least one semester, but who has not yet graduated.
  • Your internship must require you to earn academic credit as a condition of hiring.
  • Your internship sponsor must be able to engage you in at least 120 hours of work during the internship period.
  • Your internship partner must be willing to evaluate your work and sign off that you completed at least 120 hours of work by the conclusion of the internship.
Contact Career Services if you are an incoming first-year student, a transfer student, or graduating senior hoping to receive credit, or if you have any questions about your eligibility for the program.

General Questions

Is my internship any less valid if I don't earn credit?
Absolutely not! The true value of an internship is the exposure and experience that you receive. Whether you receive credit or not, your internship will reflect the same on your resume or personal statement, or in an interview.
Can my internship credit be used toward fulfilling my graduation or major requirements?
No, the internship credit is purely supplemental. Under no circumstances may it fulfill any requirements necessary for the completion of your Colgate degree.
Can this credit be applied retroactively for internships I have already completed?
No, we are unable to apply the credit retroactively. If you previously enrolled in the Transcript Notation Program you will still receive a notation on your transcript.
What should I do if I am having a hard time searching for or securing an internship?

Students Seeking to Enroll in the Program

Can I earn credit if my internship sponsor states that credit is available, even if it is not required?
No, this program is only available for internships that require credit.
What should I do if my potential internship sponsor requires proof of credit to interview me?
Please present this document to your employer (PDF). If the internship sponsor has questions regarding Colgate's program, please have them contact Career Services at 315-228-7380.
How do I enroll in the Internship Credit Program?
Once you have been offered your internship, download the ICP application. This should be done at least five business days prior to the start of your internship. Completed applications should be submitted electronically to Career Services at internship@colgate.edu. Once your application is reviewed, Career Services will send documentation to your employer verifying your enrollment.
What assignments do I need to complete for Colgate to earn this internship credit?
Upon enrollment, you will be forwarded a packet outlining all assignments and deadlines. You will be required to write a final report, conduct two informational interviews and write synopses of each, and ensure that your internship sponsor submits a written evaluation of your work.
Can I withdraw from the Internship Credit Program without repercussions?
You may withdraw from the ICP at any time prior to the first day of the internship. Once the internship has begun, very rare exceptions will be made to allow you to withdraw from the program without receiving a failing grade. Please vet internship opportunities thoroughly prior to accepting verbally or in writing. Internship sponsors invest a good deal of time and resources in identifying interns. Once you have committed to an internship, your internship sponsor's expectation is that you are interested, willing, and able to engage in the opportunity.
How much credit will I receive? How many internship credits can I earn?
You may earn .05 credits for each approved internship completed. A maximum of four unique internship credits can be earned for a total amount of .20 credits. This credit will be documented on your Colgate University transcript.
Is my internship credit graded and does it factor into my GPA?
Internships are graded on a pass/fail basis. A failing grade will factor into your GPA. Passing grades will not affect your GPA. You will be graded on the quality and timely submission of your work, as well as whether 120 hours of work was completed and verified by the internship sponsor.
Is there an additional fee or tuition cost to enroll?
No additional fees or tuition are required for you to earn this credit.

When will credit be awarded?
In most cases, internship credit will be recorded on your transcript for the term in which the internship was completed (spring, summer, or fall). For students on medical leave, academic dismissal, or disciplinary suspension with conditions for readmission, the internship will be recorded for the term after you are readmitted.
