Career Exploration for Juniors

As a junior, employers and admission committees are expecting you to become a more focused and polished candidate -- a big shift from sophomore year expectations. We can help you along the way. Begin by reviewing last year’s plan to ensure you've hit the big steps before you move forward and then keep up your momentum.

Actionable Steps You Can Take

  1. Consult with a career adviser to refine your career action plan. Build off first-year/sophomore steps to keep moving toward your goals. If you have not developed a plan, an adviser will get you started.
  2. Research. Career advisers will help you learn how industries and career fields match your strengths, interests, and preferences.
  3. Update or create a targeted resume. Check out our online guides about how to build an effective resume, and contact us to schedule an appointment with a peer adviser.
  4. Network. Tap into your personal network and Colgate strong alumni base to learn more about your area of interest, and begin building contacts in your industry. Use the iCAN Alumni Career Advisory Network to get started.
  5. Attend information sessions that are relevant to you. We have a number of events on campus for those interested in graduate/professional school, or to explore employers.
  6. Participate in at least two mock interviews. Choose a job description for which you would like to practice interviewing, then contact us to set up a mock interview session.
  7. Determine what path to pursue senior year -- graduate/professional school, professional employment, fellowship or scholarship opportunities, etc.
  8. If relevant, pursue our summer internship grants.
  9. Have your resume approved and upload it to naviGATE, our go-to job and internship search database. If you have not done so already, you must first participate in naviGATE training.
