Summer Funding Opportunities - Endowed Fellowships

Our generous alumni have established several funds to support a variety of summer career exploration opportunities for you. Take advantage of your time and these opportunities this summer!

We encourage you to apply for summer funding as early as possible. To apply, you must have full naviGATE clearance (approved resume, Code of Conduct signed). You can apply to most of the funding sources listed on this page by completing the Career Services' Summer Funding Common Application. Additional opportunities not covered by the common application are listed at the bottom of the page.

You may apply for funding whether you have secured an internship or are still in the process of securing one. Please stop by the Center for Career Services to view last year's funding recipients' final reports.

Sources of Funding on the Common Application

Completing the common application puts you in contention to receive funding from one of the following funds, sponsored by alumni, family, and friends of the university.

Career Services' Internship Fund

Career Services is excited to offer additional  grants to fund students' practical experiences — internships, research, and community service. Experiences can be in any career field. Funding is awarded to students who best articulate the potential value of the proposed experience to the career exploration process and/or the advancement of career ambitions.

Arthur Watson, Jr. '76 Fund for Career Planning

Established in 1998 by Arthur A. Watson Jr. ’76, this is a permanent endowment fund created to provide financial assistance for one or more first- or second-year Colgate students each year who are purposefully searching for an appropriate career direction.

Examples of recently funded internships/experiences:

• $3,632 to work at a health clinic with the Cross Cultural Solutions program in Ayacucho, Peru
• $2,500 to teach in Ghana through the Global Volunteers Network
• $3,925 to teach peace and conflict resolution in a Liberian refugee camp in Ghana through the Global Volunteers Network
• $2,420 to volunteer for the Home of Hope orphanage in Cape Town, South Africa

Aaron Jacobs '96 Fund

Established in 2004 by Laurence and Alice Jacobs P’96, this is a permanent endowment fund created in honor of their son, Aaron Jacobs ’96. This fellowship provides support for one or more Colgate students who wish to intern in the financial or business fields.

Dr. Merrill Miller Endowed Fellowship

Established in 2005 by Dr. Merrill Miller, Director of Student Health Services at Colgate University, this fund supports students who want to gain experience through an internship or research experience in health or other science-related fields. This fellowship provides financial assistance to a Colgate University sophomore, junior, senior, or an exceptional first-year.

• Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale (INSERM), Toulouse, France
• Del. E. Webb Neuroscience, Aging, and Stem Cell Research Center at Sanford Burnham Medical Research Institute, La Jolla, CA
• Williams and Associates (a non-profit organization addressing minority health disparities), St. Louis, MO
• NH-Dartmouth Family Medicine Residency at Concord Hospital, Concord, NH

John A. Golden '66 Pre-Law Fellowship

The John A. Golden '66 Pre-Law Fellowship provides financial support for two or more Colgate juniors who plan to pursue a graduate law degree and career in law and have a 3.5 or higher GPA. Selection is based on academic and extracurricular achievement. This fund supports internship experiences in law firms, district attorney offices, political campaigns, government, or public policy.

• Litigation group of Melick, Porter, and Shea, LLC, Boston, MA
• Entertainment Legal Department of William Morris Endeavor, Beverly Hills, CA
• Early Case Assessment Bureau at King’s County District Attorney’s Office, Brooklyn, NY
• Asia Advocacy Branch of Amnesty International in Washington, DC

John A. Golden '66 Pre-Medical Fellowship

The John A. Golden '66 Pre-Medical Fellowship provides funding for summer internships and research to highly qualified first-years, sophomores, and juniors with a GPA of 3.5 or higher who are interested in pursuing a career in human medicine. Mr. Golden’s ultimate objective is to support students’ desire to attend top medical school programs through a significant internship/research experience.

• Center for Cancer Research, National Cancer Institute, Bethesda, MD
• Vanderbilt Undergraduate Clinical Research Internship Program, Nashville, TN
• Lighthouse International, New York, NY
• Camp Sunshine, Casco, ME

David M. Jacobstein '68 and Cara Jacobstein Zimmerman '97 Fellowship

The David M. Jacobstein ’68 and Cara Jacobstein Zimmerman ’97 Endowed Fellowship was established in 2007 to provide stipend support for internships for one or more students, particularly those interested in a public interest internship in fields such as law or politics. Preference is given to students who wish to undertake a public interest internship in fields such as law or politics. Preference will also be given to students who qualify for need-based financial aid from Colgate University.

Examples of recently funded experiences:

• Intern with Big Brothers Big Sisters in State College, PA
• Congressional Intern for Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy in Washington, D.C.
• Intern in Senator Charles Schumer’s Western New York District Office in Buffalo, NY
• Intern in the Communications Department for the National Partnership for Women and Families in Washington, D.C.

Milhomme International Internship Program

The Milhomme International Internship program was created by Phillip Milhomme ’60 to support Colgate students eager to enhance their global competency and gain career experience through an internship abroad. Recognizing the financial obstacles to interning overseas, this program annually makes four awards of up to $5,000 each for living and internship-related expenses.

Examples of recently funded experiences:

• Arava Power Company, a start-up solar power company in Herzliyah Pituach: Israel, project-managing and directing a promotional video project and assisting with marketing activities
• YiWu International Environmental Technology Institute, an environmental technologies solutions firm in Beijing: China, consulting on internal business operations
• American Chamber of Commerce of Trinidad and Tobago, writing marketing materials and securing corporate sponsorship for the chamber’s annual regional conference
• Dental Santa Cruz, a dental supplies firm in Lima: Peru, identifying and evaluating opportunities for business expansion

The Jim P. Manzi '73 Fellowship

The Manzi Fellowship Program is a paid summer internship program that allows students attending Colgate University to work in non-profit organizations in the Boston area. Established in 1995 by Jim Manzi ’73, students are selected on a competitive basis. Significant criteria for selection are a demonstrated commitment to community service and the potential to pursue such work after college. Those awarded a Fellowship receive a stipend of $4,200 and are assigned to a project or agency, working 40 hours per week for 10 weeks. Applications are available mid-October.

Music and Youth Fellowship

The Music and Youth Fellowship is a paid summer internship program for students attending Colgate to work in nonprofit youth development organizations in the Boston area. Established in 2011, students are selected on a competitive basis. Significant criteria for selection are a demonstrated commitment to community service, a desire to work with underserved youth in a musical capacity, and the potential to pursue such work after college. Fellows receive a stipend of $3,500 and work 40 hours/week for 8 weeks.

The Zambello Arts Administration Fellowship

Established in 2011 by Wally Kraemer ’58 in honor of Francesca Zambello ’78, Artistic and General Director of The Glimmerglass Festival, the Zambello Arts Administration Fellowship provides stipend support for two Colgate students who wish to intern at The Glimmerglass Festival. The Glimmerglass Festival stages three operas and one work of American musical theater each summer in Cooperstown, NY, with a preeminent cast and crew. Production, administration, and artistic administration internships are available. Students from all class years are encouraged to apply for this unique opportunity.

Levine-Weinberg Endowed Summer Fellowship
